I had some rocks hit my windshield and I've got some small chips in it.
I really LOVE my car! Can someone tell me what I need to do to repair it myself? My brother can help with anything tough. I just need someone to tell us how to do it.
If you love your car, call a windshield repair technician to repair it for you. If you have comprehensive insurance, more than likely it won't cost you anything.
It's not cost effective to repair it yourself, since the good supplies are not available in single use quantities, and will end up costing more than the cost of a repair. Not to mention the equipment part.
THANKS for your quick reply. I knew you guys could help me!
My brother knows a guy who works at a glass place and can probably get the stuff we need but he doesn't think he'll help us do it. Pretty please......can you tell me what I need to do with the stuff?
Amber, it sounds like you really love your car. Many people don't take the time to get their windshield repaired soon enough and risk having to replace instead of repairing it.
I am confident that you love your car so much by you taking the time to register and post here that I don't think you would be happy driving around with permanant black spots in your windshield. Windshield repair is not rocket science, but it does take practice and the ability to understand what your looking at while doing the repair. Once you start the repair you don't have the time to stop post here and wait for a reply if your having difficulties. You will pretty much be stuck with the way it turns out.
If you let us know what city you live near maybe a technician on from this forum may be able to stop by and inspect your windshield for you. Perhaps you my only have some surface chip that don't need repaired.
Please stay away from the hardware store repair kits. You will not be satisfied with the results and may ruin any chance of getting it repaired properly. You will need professional tools and quality resin to make a repair that will restore the integrity of your windshield. You can't get the tools and supplies for less than the cost of a repair by a qualified tech. Plus you will have the piece of mind that it was done correctly.
Amber, It sounds like you want to try and repair the windshield yourself with your brothers help. Windshield repair is not something that you can just figure out on your own and get it right (even in your first 50 to 100 attempts).
If you try to fix it yourself (without training, lots of practice and professional equipment), it will no doubt cost you an entire windshield replacement. You could easily crack the glass without very much effort. There are alot of elements involved in windshiled repair - which I won't go into right now.
Windshield repair is very affordable and saves you a ton of money.
Look in your local phone book under "Windshield Repair" and call a couple places to see if they can repair it for you. Just watch out for the bait and switch tactics used by some of glass "replacement" companies. Have a qualified "windshield repair" technician look at it.
A typical repair may cost you anywhere from 0 to 60 bucks - depending on local market and if your insurance covers glass repair. But if you try to repair it yourself, it could cost you a new windshield - and that can run anywhere from $200 to $500 depending on the type of car you have.
When calling a windshield repair tech, he or she is going to want to know a few things such as...
1. How old is the break
2. Where is the break located on the windshield.
3. How large (in diameter) is the break.
4. Are there any cracks emitting from the break.
5. If there are cracks, how long are they.
SUGGESTION...
Avoid driving on any dirt roads until you get the break fixed. You don't want to contaminate the break with road dust and dirt (it won't take much). A dirty break results in a dirty permenant repair.
