Pit polishing

Post by Dave M »

I just finished reading Brent's article on pit polishing in the news letter and I have a question or two.
1. 5 minute curing time, is that for all types of curing lights (battery to 9 watt dual bulb)
2. Using one drop of pit polish, polish for 60 seconds. I have not tried polishing for that long a time (I'm writing this right after reading your news letter) so I will try this in the morning. However, does polishing that long on one drop not over heat the glass or make the polish just disappear? I was told to polish for 5-10 seconds and wipe off while still wet. Have I been doing this wrong for 12 years? My pits come out shiny and smooth!

Arghhh, pits. My #1 frustration which I have endured for 14 yrs. Seems the pit filler simply will not stay in pits long enough. I have tried everything in the world with no success. Daily, with each and every fleet customer, I am refilling pits. Have used all different fillers avaliable, insured no tiny air bubbles exist, tried lateral footing's under glass surface, etc. Is this an impossibility? Not something that is 100% important to keeping customers, simply a peeve of mine. Tough being your own worst critic:)

That's a nice round average actually. Many lights cure faster, few slower. When in doubt, go with the recommendations of whoever you purchased your light from.

If your pits come out shiny and smooth, sounds like you're doing it just fine! 60 seconds is on the high end, and Brent's basically saying that if you polish for 60 seconds, the pit will look as good as it can look. Now, that doesn't mean that if you do it for 50 or 40, it won't. Some large pits need a longer time, and 60 seconds is definitely the high end.

Oh, now we have math "experts" on the forum! ;) He's been doing the same trick (except backwards) with my paycheck for years!

Thanks for the catch though. :)

Very strange. I would ensure that you're scraping at a 90 degree angle for starters. Are you cleaning windshields first? I would say gut reaction sounds like you're using a bad brand of filler, but you say you've used different ones...Hmmm.

I would be peeve to, but it does happen, don't know what your are trying everthing in the world for. Hmmm Try a good pit filler, scrape @ 90%, clean the pit out and bur it up a little more. cure for 5 min and read the delta news letter while waiting, not in this order. But what do you when you redo a pit?
