Types of pit filler?

Post by jonnyques »

Hi all, I did a quick search and didnt find any posts on this. We have all seen the "which resin is best?" questions, but Id like some thought on pit fillers. Heres what Ive found. Liquid Resins, VERY THICK! Sometimes I thought the nozzle was going to blow out the end of the bottle trying to get a drop. With it so thick it holds alot of air bubbles so it needs to be kept upside down. I now only use it if I have a monster pit, as it does stay in place. Cost $29.95 15ml. GlassMechanics, VERY THIN. I find theirs will run out of the bottle and down the windshield quick! Its nice for drill holes (not that I ever drill :) ) as its thinner and can get ito that small opening easier. Cost $45 / 30ml ... Best value volume vs price. The last one I have tried is Delta's. As the three bears would say "this ones just right!" I find it to be in between the other two types. In my opinion the best all around filler. Cost $29.95 / 7mls. I have wondered if there is a difference quality of "stick" or life span in the repair? Any one know if the thickness relates to hardness? Just looking for opinions and input.

That liquid resins stuff looks like just the ticket for putting in big pits to make a nice flat surface to mount my bridge on without the resin penetrating into the break to far and stopping me from injecting my repair resin into the repair. Thanks johnnyques for the research tips.

I live in puerto rico(hot climate)i always use the liquid resin pit filler 3800cps for edge cracks and pit filler.works very well.note:ultra bond long crack resins are 3800 cps.i believe the same viscosity of liquid resin $29.95 resins.if i buy from liquid resins more than 3 bottles the price for each bottle goes down to $23.95.if you like the ultra bond long crack resin you need to pay royalty fees each month.(about $150.00 dollars).i believe the secret for good pit filler resin is on the cps. someone who knows a good pit filler and edge crack for hot weather on base of your own experience is welcome.thanks for the attention.

most mfgs have a couple different its really unfair to just say one is too thick or too thin each has its own purpose and too be honest with the resin I use now i take thew injector off put on a cure tab and cure with the resin i filled with i seldom use a pit filler unless the outside has a big chip missing

I havn't seen other pit fillers offered by the companies, who's resins I've tried. I'm a strong believer in using pit filler. Doing wholesale work, I'm always surprised at the number of badly finished repairs I see. Granted I wasn't there to see how the repair was done or finished. When I see old repairs where the resin is breaking up or missing in a pit, I chalk it up to the tech NOT using pit filler. I also see drill holes that are empty of resin or filler. Perhaps a great long lasting repair can be done without filler. To me the cost of using it, and knowing I've done the best job using the best products, justify the cost. Wholesale or retail I treat them the same.
On a side note. has anyone seen an old repair they have done with or without filler to see how the pit has stood up? I guess it is possible that a pit filled with filler may look like crap after a few years. Anyone done their own car, hows the pit holding up?

All of my work is retail and I have customers that I have repaired chips on the vehicle for several years. I have found that the repairs that I did years ago still look good. I have seen repairs on new customers vehicles that don't look very good as you mentioned the drill hole completely empty. I used to use a pit filler and I still do if the impact point is large but if it is small and if I drill into a break I usually tab with the resin I fill with.

I have seen 1 of these repairs with the pit filler or resin missing from the chip..so whats goin on here ? is the resin falling out of these repairs or is it erodeing away .I am kinda curious about this.It should stay in the drill hole at least I wuold think.

It could be something as simple as the owner using silicome products (rainx) on their shield and the pit resin not sticking. I filled a crack once that the owner said they didn't use rainx on their shield but turner out they used rainx washer fluid. The crack filled nice but in a day or two the crack opened all the way back up as it I hadn't touch it. The resin just wouldn't adhere to the glass.

I had the same problem 2 days ago. Customer says they don't use anything on the windshield but something was on there really good. I had to clean it at least 5 times before I could get the pit resin to stick at all.

I've been getting into the habit of asking first if they use anything on the windshield. I never thought about asking about washer fluids though. That's good info to have.

Another thing that prevents pit filler from sticking is when customers take thier car thru automatic car washes and use wax
