personally I signed up with Safelite because I had to, in order to bill through them for the insurance companies that are under their umbrella, I don't care if they ever send me a referal because I don't need them to survive, I also don't send them any of the customers that need their windshields replaced, I have a couple of shops I refer replacement's to and I emphasize to the customer that they ask exclusively for the shop name I give them.

When I first started in the business Safelite was sending me 5 to 6 repairs a week even though they had a shop in town. The last 5 yrs. I have not received on referal from them. It was about that time period I belive that the insurance companies began to require a greater repair to replacement ratio from the shops that do replacements. Since then I believe Safelite repairs everything they can.

I like getting insurance jobs from people that their insurance company uses the SGC Network. Safelite has really taken care of theirselves when nego. price. Many of the insurance companies pay 60.00 and up with the exception of Geico.

As for lynks you will be hard pressed to get anything over 50.00.

We are all in need of SGC and Lynx and they are in realitivley little need of us. Lynx has been better about dispatching jobs to us, i get one every other day or so. SGC gets sued on a regular basis for unfair trade practices based on them refering jobs to themselves, in my mind they need to pick one or the other, the call center or the glass company. In any case I had a list of companies affiliated with or using SGC as their glass claims provider that was a few years old, as I went about up-dating it I realized that roughly 1 in 5 insurance companies had switched to someone else. SGC won't let you 'into' their club until you've been in business for a year.

So do we (repair businesses) need sgc to do insurance jobs under their "umbrella" of insurance companies? Im not sure if i quite understand sgc and lynx/metryx yet.

SGC and LYNX/Metryx, plus other smaller operators, are collectively known as "The Network". They do the billing chores and job assignments for the insurance companies. It might be convenient for you to be a member because you might get some jobs the easy way.

Many techs do not use the networks and may not even do insurance jobs. They charge cash and let the customer deal with a refund from the insurance company. Sometimes the networks are a pain in the neck, or other parts. They have, in my opinion, a long way to go in the communications department.

In my case, I am signed up with both SGC and LYNX and take what they send me. I don't depend on them to make a living. There are a few techs who I've met who, in the past anyway, relied solely on the networks. With State Farm pulling out of the mix, that might be a tougher way to go for them.

My advice, if you want it, would be to build your business in all aspects of the industry: Insurance, cash jobs, and fleets. Over time you might migrate toward one of those or more, and maybe eliminate one or more.

I recieved a letter from SGC saying they wouldn't approve my business untill it was in business for at least a year. Does this mean I cannot bill the companies in there umbrella? I dont need referrells. Only trying to do work with the insurance companies that go through SGC.

You can bill the insurance company or you can have the customer pay you and he can file his receipt with his insurance company.

You can also use ACT to file the invoice. If you contact the customer's insurance company first and get a pre-authorized dispatch number you can make use of ACT's least expensive service and minimize the fee they charge.

Get on the list if you can and hope to get some extra work but I wouldnt hold my breath waiting. One would be mighty Blue if the did. Myself I pass on being on the list I will do insurance work I find but have found they tend to send you quite a distance and often you get there to find a broken or unrepairable job.
