windshield nicks
windshield nicks
hello,
first i'll start off by saying i'm not in the glass business...i simply need some pointing in the right direction. i have a 2006 saturn ion which up until yesterday had a few "nicks" in the windshield. thise were easy to overlook, although yesterday i noticed 2 small dots that are right in my line of sight.
when i run my finger over them i can tell that it is a nick (from outside appearance it looks like it could be dirt, from the inside they look like tiny white marks, esp when sun shines on them).
anyway is there any way at all that something like this can be fixed? i baby that car and am sick over this. my old car had the same thing but that occured after i had it for 3 years, not 3 months!
i'm aware that having a place like safelite fill them in probably won't work and could make them more noticeable. will an auto glass shop be able to buff out something like this?
any insight would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Re: windshield nicks
Do not recommend buff out, you would only end up with glass distortion even if they did come out.
Re: windshield nicks
is there any way at ALL to get rid of them short of replacing the windshield?? would having them "repaired" by safelite be worth or a shot? Would it be possible for them to repair?
Re: windshield nicks
If you are saying that the two nicks that are in your line of site are bothering you, then I don't think a repair will even help you. After the repair, there is still a very small mark left on a surface chip repair. The glass itself is missing and it is being replaced or filled with a resin, which although very slight, you'll still see.
If you are not bothered by these nicks where they are and you are just wanting them repaired, tell us what State you are in and I'm sure someone here can help you out. I think that would be a better option than Safelite.

Re: windshield nicks
thanks jac
they aren't directly in my line of sight...off to the right side actually but not far orr from where i look straight ahead and it's enough to bother me.
they are definitely nicks in the glass, although very tiny from the outside. it just bothers me when i drive because i know they're there!
so these would be filled with resin just as a crack in the glass would be? i had safelite do a repair on my old car but a rock hit the glass and actually put a small crack in it. as i said before, i know that filling these nicks with resin will still allow them to show, but i'm worried about wintertime where i am scraping the glass to remove ice. if i were to catch one of those nicks the wrong way im afraid i would make it worse.
was going to call the saturn dealer tomorrow to see if they have anyone that can help, otherwise i would need to look for a repair place. btw i am in new york, right outside of buffalo. thanks

Re: windshield nicks
a nik is a nik is anik... nothing you can do about it ..they will not go away..if you are that upset about replace the window..realize of course it will happen again. maybe next week or a month down the road they are a fact of life..pit filler is not a repair..and if you pay somebody to do it your wasting your money..if you you go to the dealer they will just call a wr guy who will put in pit filler and you will be paying for nothing..:eusa_booh

i realize it is not going away no matter what, but if i dont have it filled in and go to scrape over that area im afraid i could make it worse....
and there's no way i can avoid scraping there. sometimes we get terrible amounts of ice on the windows and you have to scrape. at least that filler would bond it and i wouldnt have to worry about making it worse

Re: windshield nicks
look very closely to see if there is a fine crack or if you see black in the chip. If so, then it needs to be filled by a repair tech. If you see no crack or black most likely it's what we refer to as a "pit" and will not spread in either extreme heat or cold. I will fill a couple of these free of charge as a goodwill gesture to my past or potential customers.
Re: windshield nicks
i looked again.....
they are really tiny and i wonder if you could even fill them with anything. they are small dots which as i said you can feel if you run your fingernail across them, but if there's no risk of them getting worse w/ me scraping the ice off then maybe there's nothing to do with them further.
i even had to really look again to find them exactly yet when i'm driving i know right where they are. would something like that which is smaller than the tip of a ballpoint pen be a candidate for any filling in??
