should i get into glass repair?

^^^^^ should i get into repair? i am real interested in this repair buisness. i am only 17 and would not be starting a full buisness. it would just be some side cash. my dad actually happens to work at ups and i know the manager real well so i am sure that they would let me repair a lot of their windshields. i was thinking of the windshield doctor quick kit. it seems like a good idea?

The head on the WD is to heavy and often falls off verticle glass if you are hoping to do UPS trucks they are al verticle I would look for a different system. I purchased the WD system as my first system it didnt take long to find it wasnt what what was needed The site you are on (Delta) has good stuff and ive had good luck with Liquid Resins products for vert glass. GOOD LUCK

well i wouldnt be doing mostly ups style trucks but a whole range of vehicles. what do you suggest as a first starter kit. do you suggest getting into the biz

Floyd, I'll be straight forward. There are too many so called repair techs out there who buy a cheap repair kit with a manual (maybe a video) and set out to repair chips. Results; inferior equip. + no training = poor quality + unhappy customers = a bad name for our industry.

If you're serious, even as a part timer, invest in good equipment from a mfg. who also provides hands-on training. If you are able to land a UPS account, you could recoup your equipment cost within a month or so.

that is a good idea. my boss right now at my work which just happens to be an autobody shop used to own his own shop in clovis nm, for 15 years and knows a lot about glass repair. he is the one that gave me the idea and then i finally looked into it and was interested. i asked him yesterday and he said he would train me to do it. he knew about the drill bits and bridges and all that, i didnt think he would, so apparently he knows his stuff. so i can get training from him i would think. the only thing i would want to do is pay off the cost of the kit and anything from there would be just a bonus plus the learning expierience. also i am friends with the safelite worker here in santa fe and do you think i should ask him if he could train me? he is a real cool guy and i am sure that he would'nt mind.

Hey Floyd, please call, and hopefully visit, at least several professional windshield repair guys. Try to find someone who makes a full-time living at it and doesn't do it as a side job. If you are going to enter our profession, please be professional about it every step of the way. It can be a great business if you do it right from the get-go. Good luck!

I would jump on any training you could get. The more the better! If you take the Delta Kit's Training you dont have to own a kit. you could complete the training then decide if it's somthing you want to get into.
