Rock chip too large for repair?

Post by VCi15 »

I got this rock chip driving on the freeway driving about 65-70 MPH when something hit my windshield. Called the insurance and they set up for me to get a free rock chip repair from Speedy Auto Glass. I went there and drove my car in their garage until the guy said the rock chip is too big and I just got to wait for it to crack more and replace the windshield.

I didn't think it was that big but I don't have any expertise so I don't know. Do you think this rock chip is too big to be repaired. I took pictures of the chip on my car with a quarter next to the chip.

My best mentor one said " be fair with your priceing but never too low, be honest with your customer/competition, when the day is done be sure you have done "good works", and always leave something of value on the barganing table!!

While my friend and trainer/ mentor Ray has moved on, his words live.

I find it ironic that it was a speedy auto glass commercial (many years ago) that got me thinking about the windshield repair business. They showed a simple bullseye being repaired -- "now you see it... now you don't"

I thought that tv commercial was pretty cool. It's ironic now that I am in the windshield repair business doing repairs that they say can't be done.

Thanks for sharing the pictures - and yes, this type of break is repairable. It is an extremely common type of break and it can be repaired by any competent windshield repair tech who knows what he/she is doing.

Excellent job taking those pictures. What camera are you using? And would you mind if I used them for a website I'm looking to build?

yeah, no problem for a repair and I see no cracks coming off of it either. I fixed one today about 1 1/2 that size with 4 3 inch cracks coming off it. End result was very good and the client was very happy and asked me to come back about some on his wife's vehicle.

It looks as if it is just below your field of vision so I would have it repaired sooner than later.

Where are you located?

wow I think I will go back tommorow and try to get it repaired again.

I used a Sony DSC-P200 which is 7 megapixels. Sure you can use the photos.

I'm located in Portland, Oregon.

Great Photos. Hard to tell if it falls in the acute area though. Kind of looks like it might. No worries though this type of break can easily be repaired. One thing to keep in mind is that this type of break will leave a little more scaring so if it is in the acute area it might be a disruptive blemish for you. That is your call though. I definately would not go back to the same shop as they have a vested intrest in selling you the bigger ticket item, the windshield. Find someone who does lots of repairs and turns out quality. Good luck.

VCi15-
I would think twice about going back to the same place that wants to just replace your windshield. It might be worth your time to find a private reoair only guy or a shop that will repair it.

And thanks for letting me use those pictures, they are much better than anything I've been taking. I'm using a Sony DSC-V1 which doesn't do so well at focusing on glass.
