Alergic Reaction to Resins?
Alergic Reaction to Resins?
What a great forum you all have here! Found it this morning while doing some research and have been reading non-stop since 7 a.m. (it's now 5:30 p.m. & I'm up to page 20... only 100 more to go!) and have learned A LOT... thanks! Have any of you had an alergic reaction to the resins? I have been repairing windshield's since July... about 70 under my belt so far. Two weeks ago, my hands started itching, for no apparent reason, and now my palms & between my fingers are covered with little tapioca-like itchy bumps:( . Doc says it's exema, a malady I've never had before, gave me cortzone/steroid cream & said to come back in 2 weeks. Am I having a reaction or did I get into something else???? I know that there are acid-free resins... do I need to switch & will they help? Are they as good as the regular? I am using the green top resins & injector system from Liquid Resins, which I am very pleased with. Also, it's been very hot since I began in this business but will be cooling off real soon. Do I stay with the green top or switch to a thinner resin for colder weather? I mainly work on big truck/fleet accounts, have only worked on 3 cars so far. Thanks for any input & I look forward to reading more posts!

Try wearing nitrile gloves during the repair.
Re: Alergic Reaction to Resins?
Mr. Bill is right,
Some of of us develope reactions to resin chemical exposure while others never seem to have a problem with it.
Once sensitivity to resin occurs, you'll need to wear protective gloves. Nitrile is first choice because it's very resistant. Unfortunately in my case, I also have a sensitivity to both nitrile and latex gloves, so I use something totally different.
Try the nitrile first and see if it helps!

Re: Alergic Reaction to Resins?
I would suggest trying a barrier cream instead of gloves. I had a reaction years ago and my palms actually peeled like a bad sunburn. I wore gloves for quite a while after and always hated them. Too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. I switched to a barrier cream when I heard of it and it worked great. I believe most wsr suppliers sell it. I have since switched resins and after a while stopped using the barrier cream. Haven't had a reaction in a long time.
Re: Alergic Reaction to Resins?
Search on the forum:Resin Reaction,Allergic Reaction and Acid Free Resin,I had and still do have problems with my fingers.Barrier cream a waste of money, nitrile gloves help very little, the main thing is to develop a way to get the resin in the injector without getting it on your fingers. Now for acid free resin,it doesn't exist some claim acid free but it is not it still contains some acid,I now use GT resin,it helps but I still break out from time to time.Resin is some bad s---,it still goes thru nitrile gloves and I use 8mil.thickness from Lab Safety Supply.LSS.com.
Re: Alergic Reaction to Resins?
Oh it only hurts a little... get over it... Just kidding use gloves. yes there is a barrier cream you can use too I wish I knew the name of the product to help you out. Google it... good luck... I love WSR......
Re: Alergic Reaction to Resins?
There is a product you can buy on here called dermashield. It seems to work pretty good. I seem not to have a reaction to resin though... at least not yet. Its pretty cheap, if you havent tryed it yet, its worth the try in my opinion.

Re: Alergic Reaction to Resins?
As part of the repair process you must include personal protection and a good cleaning regime to reduce the risk of contamination. Barrier creams, nitrile gloves ( normal usage time is no more than ten minutes ) & afterwork handcleanser should be part of your personal protection, combined with routine cleaning of your equipment with chemicals such as Acetone (remove any rubber seals before cleaning).
Re: Alergic Reaction to Resins?
I had this reaction a few years ago....I treated it for a while and tried the nitrile gloves. Profuse sweating of the hands caused me to discontinue the gloves. I guess that I built up a resistance to the resin since I haven't had a problem since.
Regarding acetone as a cleaning agent, I strongly disagree. It has a flammable range greater than gasoline. It can be ignited by the static electricity accumulated on your body! I use denatured alcohol. Be careful.
