Legs got longer

Post by Mr Bill »

Today I repaired a star break on a Jeep Cherokee which was sitting in the sun. The windshield did not feel hot, but after I popped a bullseye and attached the injector ( Delta Kits ) ,two legs of the star had grown from 3/4 inch to 2 inches. I was able to fill the legs ok, but for a few minutes , I was nervous.
I only used 1/2 turn on the injector, so I dont feel that I had too much injector pressure against the glass.
That is the first time that I have had that problem occur.
Any suggestions?:

I had one do the same thing but it windshield made a loud pop and the windshield went from a starbreak to a crack or unrepairable windshield in just a few mins. I do not know what happen. But I bit the bullet. Oh well

Be sure to check the manufacture of the windshield,if it says SGC or Safelite be very careful they make junk.

Mr Bill.

Before working on any repair, you should always be concerned with glass temps!!!

Not just the outer layer of glass but also the inter layer. Have to remember if inside layer of glass is expanded because of interior heat, it will put a lot of stress on outside layer of shield. Did you happen to check the inside temperture of shield prior to repairing?

During the spring, fall and winter months I would suggest that you check these things daily. It will save you many problems.

Bill why did you pop the bull? clean the impact point and apply the injector I find time and cycles will fill most breaks worst case you run a match under a stuborn leg from the inside while in vac mode that should open up the stubborn ones.
Pop a bulls eye? Never have never will I dont believe causing more damage gives one a better repair some teach this technique but its just a way to hurry the process IMHO hurry and sometimes they take off throw warm glass into the mix and you are asking for trouble
I am very familiar with your area and the climate SCHS class of 77 my dad still has several properties there and I visit often. so I know this time of year the dirrect sun can be warm missed many a school day in sept to head to the beach. good luck just give the time and cycle a try I bet you will discontinue the pop a bull practice

I didn't get my training from Delta, but I've never been taught to "pop" a bullseye. I like to drill everything to assure good access. At least 3 vacuum/pressure cycles. Sometimes a little flexing with a probe. And using a match? Never heard of it!

First of all. Before I popped a bullseye; I drilled at the impact point.
I know that DK doesn't recommend drilling every time, but I have found that it works best for me. Many times, I have applied the injector without drilling and the break didn't fill. I dont like removing the injector and then having to drill, so I drill first.
If you search the archives, you will see that some people like to drill and some never will.
Some people say patience and time is all you need. How much time are we talking about?
I worry about the resin curing while I am doing the repair. I use a bubble, but at the back of my mind I am thinking "Better get this filled before it starts to cure!"
In retrospect, I probably should have rolled the windows down on the car and waited 10 minutes for the temperature of the windshield to stabilize.
Thanks for your input and suggestions!!

While in the vac mode run a match back and forth under the leg from inside I us a paper match so I dont get things to0 hot gotta stop before you cook yer fingers .I know some us a lighter but tempted to cook things too long. The heat then cooling often will open the leg up rather then flexxing a fragile leg dont use the heat when in pressure or thing might get worse instead of better
