Drill bits/burs - any ideas?
Drill bits/burs - any ideas?
I'm just getting started in repair and am finding that my 1-speed 12 volt drill is tearing up my drill bits. I'm only getting one hole out of a bit. At $2 a pop, that's going to add up quickly!
What's the best speed for drilling glass?
What's the best drill bit material - carbide? diamond?
Can a lubricant be used while drilling? Or will that contaminate the break?
Where do you buy your drill bits?
What style bits do you use?
Thanks for your advice.

Re: Drill bits/burs - any ideas?
I find a slower speed is better. Definitely go with carbide.
Re: Drill bits/burs - any ideas?
i use a dremal it has 2 speeds low and high i use low. i also buy carbide bits, when i drill i drill in and out in for two sec. this will help keep the bit sharp. if you just drill the heat will cause the bit to dull and could cause it to snap off in the glass. so use in and out motion my bits last for about 15 to 20 drills, and seeing how i only drill the end of cracks my bits last for a long time
Re: Drill bits/burs - any ideas?
I agree with Mafsu and Dragwurm.
- LOW SPEED
- CARBIDE BITS
The drilling action should be a "pumping" action or "in & out" action like Dragwurm said. That will keep the bit from becoming too hot as was already mentioned.
Make sure you have a tight grip on your drill (WITH BOTH HANDS). It is quite easy to let it skip across the glass if you are not carful. Also, usually when you are drilling you are leaning on the vehicle in someway. Make darn sure that your buttons, zippers or belt buckle on your clothes don't come in contact with the vehicle or you will have scratches to explain to your customer. Always use a hood protector and perhaps even a thick towel if necessary.

What are you calling "low speed?" 5,000 rpms? 10,000?
Where are you guys buying your bits?

Im surprised to see that you use the low speed. Ive always used high speed, and have had no problems.

if you aplly pressure and back off then again your bits last longer.
Re: Drill bits/burs - any ideas?
i agree with glassstarz apply pressure back off then apply it again never had any problems use a carbide drill bit from delta along with a dremel drill you should get atleast twenty repairs but if the bit is dull it could break off in the process of arepair always be professional and professional tools
