Are Windshields UV resistant?

Post by WANTONSOUPGUY »

It might be a dumb question, but i've been wondering it for a while. Often we use mirrors to see our repairs, but when I reflect light from the sun through the windshield and towards the injector to cure the resin, does the light that reflects through the w/s, onto the mirror, and back to the reapr still have the UV radiation it has before it goes through the w/s?
In other words, do windshields filter UV rays?>

Not a dumb question at all.

A windshield typically blocks approximately 97% of ultraviolet light.

It is my understanding that uv waves are short wave length and do not penetrate thick materials. If they did then we could get sunburn through long-sleeved shirts. I hope this helps you.

You dont get sunburnt in the car the glass filters some and the pvc laminated layer does the rest

So, I guess, then, I should be aiming my mirror around the repair itself, rather than try to get a beam of light to reflect off the mirror.

Thanks for your wisdom, everyone...

"pvc" (positive crackcase ventilation) sorry GS. I couldn't pass that one up. LOL

The only thing the mirror is used for is for putting on the inside of the windshield (under the break) so that you can see what's happening during the repair process from outside the vehicle. It serves no other purpose.

Sneck...since I don't move the vehicle, I sometimes use the mirror to bounce or reflect uv rays onto the repaired area. Works great for me and it concentrates the rays.

Glad to see we get the full use of our mirror, it is a useful took in my bags. I had it made about 4x6 with sanded side from a mirror shop, it was actually left overs that was going to be throw away, so it was free but i did fix a chip for him...

PVB layer of windshield blocks the majority of UV. So would placing mirror inside of vehicle for inspection have any direct effect on curing? No, not from any of my practice shield test or past experiences in repair.
