Re: Sub Standard Repairs
I think you will find that in every buisness skill levels vary whether its house painters of doctors myself I try to do the best I can and never bad talk the competition with a customer it just unproffesional Referals are important and they come from happy people. lifes too short to sweat the dumb stuff when ever I come across a previos repair I do what I can to make it look better and go from there most often these repairs came from a replacment guy they are taught to do em that way so when the customer isnt satisfied they decide to switch to replacment its the old upsell move
Re: Sub Standard Repairs
The problem lies in the fact that with most fields the customer knows what they should expect. When they go to a mechanic they expect their car to run right (and know what that means), when they go to a doctor they expect to get healthy (and know what that means). When they get their windshield repaired they expect their windshield to be fixed (and know what the tech tells them that means).
Here lies the problem. You can only educate your customers. Once someone has been taught that what I would consider a sub standard repair is what he or she should expect.
a) they won't have their windshield repaired again, because that's not what they want to spend their hard earned money on
b) they don't know any better than to get the same sub standard repair over and over again
That is why I believe this industry would be well served if the organizations that represent it educated the public. As to what they can and should expect from windshield repair. Teach the consumer and they will make sure the companies who do good repairs prosper while the hacks will fail.

GlassStarz,
I agree with you 100%. Try to keep in mind this was a rant amongst fellow techs that can relate to a real problem and to those tech that might be part of the problem. It was not an actual dialog between our customers and us. Fact of the matter is that we never bad mouth anyone becuase for the very reason you point out. Trust me, we try to make everything about who and what we do as professional as we can.
What we do know is a horrible repair when we see one and so should the techs that are doing these repairs. You cant tell me that a tech that does a horrible repair when he is done says damn thats good and feels good about it. They know how bad it is.
We also know the customer got ripped off and is disgusted. Do we use this opportunity to sell our service, you bet and I am proud to do so as I damn well know the quality of what we provide. So I do all I can to restore the confidence of a customer who would be otherwise opposed to repair at this point.
Like I said, and many agree it is a real issue.
