Repair technique ?????

I had a weird looking stone chip this past Wednesday and was wondering how others would have approached this? To start off it was at a dealers detail shop. It was raining out so they pulled it in the shop. I wiped down the windshield with a towel then proceeded to dry out chip with a moisture evapo. The break was about the size of a half dollar, but the impact area was not your typical impact. there was no center pit just a circular break about of about 1/2 inch. It sort of looked like a cone starting out small at top and bigger at the bottom. I scraped all the loose glass off, used pit filler, cured. I then popped a mini bull in the center of damage and tried to fill. tried is the keyword there. I tried a few cycles and nothing. I ended up drilling another hole in the middle of the part that did not fill. After it was done it looked pretty good. I just wasted to see how others would have handled this type of chip. I have done about 250 repairs and this was a first.

First, Welcome to our forum. I agree with SGT that if you would provide us with a little info about yourself you would get more responses to your questions. I mean you want our help and ideas and brain picking but you don't fill out a profile to show us about yourself? WHy would we jump to help when you don't care enough about us to show us where you are or anything else. I would also jump at the chance to meet with a close fellow technician for some show and tell. These are just my opinions and not necassarily the opinions of others here. So, don't get offended as I am just a lonely little WSR tech.

From the damage you described (no pit or center fracture point in glass) I'd assume you had a blunt or round object cause the breakage. When glass is hit by larger round or blunt object with no sharp points it creates what I refer to as a coke bottle hit(flexes a very large portion of glass and leaves a huge separated cone)

Coke bottle damage very seldom shows any sign of interior cone fracturing. These circular breaks are totally separate from center and can't be repaired by drilling center.(no access or pathway to perimeter damage) Also many times, you'll find these to be a circular surface crack. These can be tricky and depending on the size sometimes not a preferred repair.

I've seen them from 2 inch diameter up to 6 inches and larger in circumference. When they're larger than 5 inches I normally suspect owners kids just lost control of a fastball.:eusa_doh:

After cleaning out the loose glass and applying pit filler to fill in the area, how could you pop a bullseye in the cured area? Wouldn't the cured pit resin prevent you from creating a bullseye - considering that the resin is soft & pliable? :eusa_thin
