I'm a newbie, so bear with me. When first starting out in the repair business, do you only do rock chips? Or do you do it all: Cracks, chips, etc.? I assume it's a personal decision. I just thought that in the beginning, I'd start out with chips only & then work my way up to more complicated repairs. I don't want to get a bad name for myself.

I would suggest that if you have the resources to get factory trained or field trained by an experienced tech to do so. If that is not possible, practice as much as possible and then practice some more and ask questions. You should know when you have done a quality repair without any doubts for the very reason you mention"Reputation" towards you and the industry as a whole. As far as cracks are concerned that will ultimately be your preference. It is another source of income in this industry for you to capitalize on. Good luck to you.

I agree with SGT- Fill out your profile so we can learn about you. Always easier to get answers when you respect the old men's feelings. Don't be skeered of cracks most are easy if you only do fresh ones-in other words don't do them that have been cracked for a year and now the customer can no longer get it inspected due to the crack that has been rained in and is dirty.

In my first few months of business (and I only do this part time), I've found that about 1/2 of my jobs are for cracks. I know that some folks don't offer crack repair, but I can usually get an acceptable result. Be sure to explain to the customer what they can expect, and they'll be glad to save the cost of replacement.

I've recently changed my crack policy to those up to 12" long. Anything longer and it would probably be best to replace the windshield. Sometimes you won't be able to repair a crack - for example if it is near the dash on a low-profile windshield - can't get the crack jack in there. I only have 2 crack jacks, so I have to repair about 6 inches at a time.

I personally don't use crack jacks. I have one but have only used it once in 12 years. I do mostly chip repair but have done a lot of crack repair in the past and was able to do a better job on crack repair without the aid of a crack jack. I guess it comes down to personal choice and technique.

Crack jacks are only needed for stubborn spots during injection, then remove as soon as possible, before curing.

I would expect training to cover cracks up to 6 inches. So I would say get out and do them, They are as easy as any repair with the right techniques.

I have heard of people using a syringe with resin and applying the resin on top of the crack. This method soaks in the crack, applying more resin on top with film tabs and then cure. Has anyone done this method? Then repair the bullseye, star, etc with the injector.:eusa_doh:

Afteer a couple of trial and error, i personally do not use crack jacks anymore.The reason is because they open up the cracks further and allow air to crep into the areas which has already nicely been filled.
