In regards to the quality of drill bits I have had great results with them not breaking for several years now. I use the ball type carbide tip ones from Glass Magicians. You can find them on-line. Also I agree that you should not leave a broken bit in the repair zone too. With a little practice you can pop them right out allowing the repair to look much better.
