Well here is my stance on free repairs technicaly no its not free because you are paying for your insurance but why not call your own personal insurance agent and ask them how it would effect your premiums and they will gladly let you know that 90% of all insurance companies do not make you pay it back unless you have 3 repairs in a year. And even if they do they do not charge you more than what the repair cost that would be illegal since it is a no fault claim.
So although it is not tech free, the benefits of using your insurance for the repair out weighs paying for it expecialy if the repair tech charges the same amount for cash jobs as I do.

Did you get a lot of business doing this?

I would do something similar and put the name of my business (for branding) I'm more interested in the long term benefit.

I havent put out the signs yet its gonna take a week till i get them back but if they get atleast 4 repairs I plan on putting out at a minimum 100 a month. I do know i had booked myself solid for guitar instruction about 3 years ago doing this. Ill let everyone know if I get any success at it or not. So just keep an eye out for this post in about 2 weeks.
