Actual Repair Costs

Post by Bois »

It's been cold and icy here for a week now and business is slow. So, I thought I'd do some calculations on how much it costs me to do a repair. Maybe this will help some newbies. I've been in business for 2+ yrs. Costs are for glass repair only.

Cost for consumable material (resin, pit resin, pit polish, curing tape/tabs, invoices, razor blades & paper towels) is $1.016 per repair/crack.

I average 1.44 repairs per windshield (retail & wholesale).

Cost (all expenses) per repair, excluding truck, is $4.87. With truck expenses, it is $9.37 per repair or ~$13.76 per windshield. I live in a rural area so truck mileage may be higher than those in urban areas. These costs do not include original equipment costs which were purchased in 2004.

Bois,

Would you please do the calculations using percentage's. I know that over the course of a year approximately 15% of my income goes on overheads, the rest in my pocket. This is a fantasic figure for any business.

Now certain overheads are fixed and some are not, example resin is not fixed, the more repairs you do the more you use. Cost of insurance etc. Is the same regardless of how much work you.

I also know that the average time I spend per week dedicated to screen repair is 25 hours from that figure and my profit margin I can work out my average hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly income. At the moment for this year my income from my repair side of my business, Is
33,000 + screen repairs over 18 years and still learning.

My wife has a couple UPS Stores, and most owners in the US net (and still have to pay personal taxes) about 15% to 18% of gross...

Yep, I think we are in a good business here! not much inventory, employee hassels, vacuuming at the end of the day, etc...

An idea...
I am a windshield reapair tech...
I would love to visit a cool place in Europe or Tahiti without having to pay for a hotel...
There are windshield repair techs in Europe...
I live in the ski town of Jackson Hole, near Yellowstone National Park, where many folks (techs included) would like to visit.
I have a house & a work vehicle and clients that call every day and don't want to wait 10 days for me to do their windshield.

How about we trade lives for a week? You come live in my house, answer my business phone, drive my car, perform repair in my area ... your family relaxes and enjoys the area... you scheule lots of time for you to also relax... I do the same back in your town...

Problems? What if I am terrible at repairs and drive your clients away or if I am rude to your best client and they leave you forever? What if your kids steal all my wife's jewelry? There would be other challenges I am certain.... but cool concept, huh?

Screenman,
My expenses run about 33% of revenue for w/s repair. This does not include my truck. Annual mileage is about 11,000 miles (rural area). Government allows $0.445 per mile as tax deduction ($5,000 in 2006). I don't keep tract of actual truck expenses.

My profit margin is lower than yours. But then I don't have the repair volume that you have. If I make too much $$ I'd have to give up Social Security (gov't retirement income). [Now, I've gone and revealed my age, again.]:eusa_shhh
