My car has magnetics ($60) on the front doors, but more business comes from the spare tire cover on the back door ('99 Honda CRV.)
The tire cover ($18) came from an RV parts store and a local sign shop made a stencil and lettered the tire cover for about $75. One of these signs will last about 4 years in the sun and get me maybe 200 jobs a year. 800 jobs/$100 = 12 and a half cents per job.

This is my car ... yep, I do lose some credibility having the "Gaudiest" vehicle in town, but using the word "Doctor" in my title, well... :) ...

I have found that most folks don't have much "respect" for folks that lean over car hoods and perform skilled labor anyway, so kinda like a carpenter... in my short experience in the field, I get the impression that folks just want a nice, kind friendly person that does excellent work and stands behind it.

I tried to attach a few pictures, but I don't know how to reduce my filesize enough....

My 30% estimate does not mean that people immediately pull over and call the number they just saw on my car... it goes back to the 5-times thing. My vehicle certainly stands out & many of my clients say, "You must be really busy, I see you all over." If I had an under-stated classy smaller magnet... they would not see me... also, my 30% includes walkups that see my car and me working under my DK space dome.

With my sophisticated lingual abilities, friendliness and reputation in our small community, I am not so concerned about the bright & flashy colors... but I do agree with maxryde in principle.

Onsite, I am far too new (less than a year) to be given much of an ear to... I bought a very sucessful business and am not the person responsible for its sucess.

Okay so I read this string and thought of this.
If magnets are such a big thing then why not also have magnet business cards, put them on you vehicle with a "take one" heading.
Some one needs a card, rip it right off your vehicle and give it to them.
That will make an impression to remember you as the person that gave me a card right off his truck. What a memory/story for them to tell.

That's what it's about making an impression.
Plus the card can go up on the fridge.
JMHO.

I carry big lettering on my company van ,, business name and phone number ,, on the front doors / ,,free chip & crack repair,, on both side panels .
While shopping I always park where it can be seen , don't mind to walk the extra few yards.
While driving on the road I had people getting next to me and wanting to talk , so both we drove into a parking lot.
I have done some repairs away from my permanent location this way.
The letteing costed $ 115.00 and is well worth it, I earned it back doing repairs en route.
I believe in advertising and consider putting some kind of a flier under the windshield wiper of the cars.
Anyone has a suggestion for a catchy one ?
Thanks already.

I have lettering across the WS in the tint band on the very top. When I drive around RV parks etc. it helps to have the people know who you are as you approach rather than after you go by. I still have to keep my ears open for people trying to stop me after they see me go by but the front sign really helps a lot.
