Drilling

Post by cazador »

I've just finished the 1-day training class in Eugene, Oregon and admitt I have learned a lot.
One basic thing I learned is NOT TO DRILL every star, bullseye or what else like I've done in the past.
Working on the practice glass with the precreated dammage , the whole training I have not used my dremmel ANY time at all , only when attacking a crack to drill a whole at the end to stop it from running.
I always was under the impression to drill a hole into any dammaged area first in order to be able , after setting the bridge , to get the resin in.
On the other the new designed injector is awesome, works great, but I've to stick with my older type for the time being.
Matt, thanks for your patience while teaching an old man new tricks !

Keep in mind that the breaks in training class are fresh - created earlier in the morning - and not exposed to road grime, water, etc. I always ask the customer how old a break is and may drill, depending on type break, to clear out any possible dirt, etc.

We often use the drill as a motorised scribe just to clean the pit out. A lot of people we train find it more accurate to use. Remember every break is different and may need very slightly different approaches. Examine every break in detail before you start the repair procedure. I agree with the previous post about fresh and old breaks. For those of you about to start training make sure you do as many if not more wet damages than you do dry ones. Not many traiing centres spend much time showing you how to dry out. I do not subscribe to the fact that a drilled pit should look better or worse than a undrilled one, although many people have problems filling a drilled pit without air bubbles.

Dude after jeff mentioned the no drill theory a couple years ago I decided to give it a try I have used 2 bits this year. Let your injector do the work it ment for. That pop a bulls eye mentality is lame how would causing more damage to the glass help make a better repair? The drill and bullseye method is the lazy method when I put the drill down and slowed down letting the injector work my repairs got 100% better and repeat customers doubled

Now you have just given a major secret away!! I also drill seldomly, but mostly use up bits on cracks and occasionally on a stubborn leg or two.
Today I repaired a chip for a USA couple doing missionary work here, USA Delta bridge, USA resin, USA Dremel drill etc - he felt quite at home when he saw this. But no drilling, combination a week old and completely gone after repair!

The way to Eugene, Oregon I drove over the Rocky Mountains , with 9% climbs and still snow there, this was a great experience. Driving into Oregon I got stopped by the Highway Patrol and the Narcotica Brigade both .To them I must have looked like a dope peddler driving in my foreign motorhome , Fiat Ducato Hymer C-Camper .After they searched my vehicle I could proceed after they wished me a good trip .After attending school I drove back to Texas visiting San Francisco, Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon South Rim. In 14 days I drove roundtrip total 4600 miles and it was well worth it to drive to Eugene iso flying, even class was only 1 day . This country has beautifull sceneries as long everyone wants to see it !

i am in nigeria so dont have the oppurtunity of getting to oregun for training.
i actually was of the opinion that unless one drills, you cant get the resin to flow in very well. now i know better.
