how to make repair spot less visible

Post by asti99 »

I want to make the spot where i repaired less visible
Do I need to polish the spot more or reduuce the area of resin with a razor
It seems that I have too large a spot that cant be reduced by razor scraping
and then the spot is opaque not clear enough to become invisible

Hi... the larger the impact point the larger the blemish is...I'm confused about what u said about the resin...u r scraping so its flush right...pit polish helps, but its been my experience that all repairs leave a blemish, that again depends on the size of the impact point...

thanks for the reply. DO you find that most of your customers expect a small
blemish as part of the repair? are they usually satisfied?

When you scrap the pit you should be holding the blade against the glass and continue scrapping until all the resin has been removed except where the resin comes to the surface of the break. Most of the time this is a very small spot that polishes up very nicely. Using a fresh razor blade each time will also help. Your pit should only be as big as the broken glass on the surface.

Assuming you are using proper techniques and quality resins, your ability to to achieve a better appearance will vary with pit size. The smaller the pit the better the outcome but there will ALWAYS be some degree of scaring, although you may need to be right on top of it to see it. Customers tend to want to view the repair upclose. It is best to have them view it from normal seated driving position to provide a better perspective of what they will see on a daily basis.

Also, you may want to try a buffing wheel on your drill at low speed.

Pit visability is why I always prefer to repair without drilling when possible.

Asti99..Are you new to this business???..sounds like you have a common misconception that many have when getting into wr..windshield repair is just that!!..perfect NO!! ..repair Yes...there will always be the pit scar that will be visible from inside..and some pits will be big...so always tell customer up front that there will be some scars.. ..you are saving them money by repairing and the 50.00 you get (or more)..is a far better alternative than replacing..always do your best but there will always be scars:smile:

Hi ASTI
Use a new blade
Back scrape across the pit at 90 degrees or less in a back and forth motion
Stop scraping when the noise of resin removal finishes, you will feel this too
the pit should be free of tram lines from the blade and be the size and contour of the original piece of missing glass.
Polish it over with a good polish on a soft duster (We use Novus #2) Polishing bobs held in a drill can burn the finish and arent normally necessary if you have done all the prceeding steps OK
this should give it a glassy lustre and it should not be opaque.
Unless you are using a drill bit larger than the pit (!) whether or not you have drilled it will not make a difference to the pit itself.
Close your eyes and rub your finger over the pit. if its done well you should not be able to feel it.
Hope that helps you but i cant help feeling that who ever trained you should have run through this with you as its a very hands on part of the process.
