Does any one do windshield repairs on Land Rovers? They have a fully heated windshield and some say not to do repairs on heated windshields. What do you think?

From our contact at PPG regarding Land Rover windshields:
The Land Rovers use a fine wire that is imbedded in the PVB, between the glass. It's really the same story, as long as you don't drill through the glass to the PVB, you can repair.

Yup, OK to repair.
The wires on the Land Rover windshield are between the laminate and the INNER lite of glass. If it was between the lami and the outer lite, that would be a HUGE NO for a repair. Even if you do not drill it at all, the damage goes down into the glass and meets the laminate. That alone is trouble, but then adding resin to it can really create havoc.
The same goes for the Ford Carlite "Insta-Clear" windshields. Not only can they not be repaired (as per Ford!), for a replacement, they MUST go to an authorized Ford dealer for not only have the wiring disconnected, but to have it completely removed! They no longer make the heated w/s for them.
There is a copy of the Ford Bulletin out there somewhere for those of you that are not familiar with it. I will try to locate it and post a link soon. If anyone does not know how to recognize one of these windshields, please speak up!!!

Some GM vehicles used what is known as "Electri-Clear" windshields. These are heated between the lami and the inner lite and GM has posted no warnings for repair since the it has no effect on the repair process. (their problems relate to the alternator) Most newer vehicles now have "heated wiper park areas". BMW, Subaru and many others are now doing this. (it stops the wipers from being frozen or packed in snow when they are off) Most of these are on the inside of the windshield similar to backglass or in fewer cases, it is again in between the lami and inner lite.

Well I have repaired all types of heated windshields never had a problem yet. In fact just yesterday I did a Land Rover the customer loved me I saved him $900.00 I have seen were the ford or gm windshields with the coating on the inner layer will discolor were it was repaired age seems to be the factor if the chip is old that

Hi Brian!
The big concern and the reason for the link to the Ford Bulletin is because of this: As "professionals" in the auto glass/windshield repair industry, WE are expected to understand these things, not the customer. When you repair a Ford Insta-Clear windshield AFTER Ford issued a Service Bulletin saying not to repair them, this is called Liability. I have always urged everyone to read industry magazines and keep up to date on current issues for just this reason. There are many possible implications to repairing these windshields, the least being, arcing, glass breaking and screwing up the vehicles electrical system. Not too good for business and the wallet unless you put in an insurance claim.
As far as the glass manufacturers setting the rules, not true. Ford would be the first to keep the heated windshield if they could because when it was available, they would get about $800 for the windshield. Now, if they get $200 for the non-heated, they are pretty lucky.
