I have an apoitment to repair a side glass with a small star. Is there anything I should be carefull about, other than it being a vertical repair?

When I inspected it it does not look to be very deep sp I shouldn't have to worry about it cracking out durning repair.

I was wondering if being a moveable glass will this cause any problems?

Thanks Guys

Star Chip Repair on side window

Post by gold star wsr »

I havent ever done a side window, but I dont suppose it would be much different from a windshield as long as the glass is laminated. I am interested to see what other techs have to say about this.

I have never come across a laminated side window, but I have pit filled normal toughened glass ones that have just got very small pit marks without any problems I would not use a drill on toughened glass it is very difficult to glue all the bits back together when it goes bang.

How times have changed, we are now finding more and more vehicles fitted with laminate side glass. As some damage is caused by vehicles that are going the other way throwing stones out it is worth looking at those you know to have laminate side glass. More work for us keep it coming.

I have a few of these laminated side glasses that I use for practice. I picked them up from a friend that manages a full service glass shop. Both had long crack damage. I guess my next question would be, is there any liability repairing these? Didn't see it mentioned in ROLAGS ANSI.

I would not have though they have even given it any thought yet. I cannot see any reason for regulations.

The reason I ask Screenman is because as far as I know, no resin test have been provided on repairs made to laminated side glass thus far. I would think a side glass impact would be quit different from a front windshield impact.

Maybe Brent can chime in on this one.

I can't see why anything about it should be any different than any other repair of laminated glass.

I'm afraid I can't be of much help here. I have not been in the replacement business for a number of years, but AS-2 & AS-3 laminated glass repairs just like AS-1, so I don't see any problems repairing side lites.

Delta Kits does hold a position on the ROLAGS committee, but as I was not personally involved with the creation of the standard I cannot say if this issue has been discussed or not, but if anything the standards on side lites are likely to be less important than on windshields as side lites are not designed as a structural component of the automobile, and are not designed to keep passengers in the vehicle during a collision. Still, I'm sure it will come up at some point if it has not already.

I have done quite a few repairs on side laminated glasses. These glasses are normally found on Mercedes Benz S-Class, Daimlers, Jags, Bentleys, some high end Toyota MPVs (van-type) and so on ..

Its no different than doing a normal repair except that when you place the bridge, its more vertical than normal. Besides a little more effort in getting the resin into the injector, the repair process is pretty straight forward and results are assuring to all my customers as per my windshield repairs.
