Wiper Replacement Add On

Post by SGT »

Who is doing this as an add on? Seems like a compatible add on for the retail side.

What company are you currently using?

What kind of pricing/mark up is realistic?

The thread does not say brands or prices as instructed to go back to.

(Gold Glass Group)
Martin or Joe (Gold)

I am not going to disclose our pricing as this is private info.

You should be able to sell a pair for between $15.00 and $20.00 installed and make a fair profit that makes it worth your time. This is a good add on service and a nice additional source of revenue. You will find that most customers do not change their wipers as often as necessary and they can end up scratching their windshield. Customers will be more than happy to pay you a fair price to install them immediately so they don't have to worry about it. Not a hard sell item. Only downfall is that you need to have a lot of wipers on hand. There are about 16 or 17 different sizes of which you would really need to have about 10 of those sizes for most vehicles. With 15 individual wipers per box/per size, that is 150 wipers at minimum. You can go thru 15 of a size real fast if you work hard and sell, sell, sell.
Euro wipers (frameless) are also becoming more and more common and are an entirely different story.

Our shop uses precision blades, they seem to be pretty reasonable priced, I believe they are approximately $3-$7 wholesale. You can stock pretty much everything you need for $300-$400. We mostly use the 17"-19" range so of course buy more of those unless you might be doing a lot of big trucks or such.

They also offer some winter blades, but I didn't order them last time, so I'm not sure what the prices are on those.

Our shop also offers an aquapel treatment which we do well with. We offer a package of $39.95 for new blades and new aqua (which you can do repeat sales in 6 months - it's lifetime), but we usually sell it for even less than that because the cost is nominal... and we tell them we have it on sale. It works well, you can easily add $25 onto an order thats only going to take an additional 15 min. $100/hr is good money.

All of our wiper sales are retail. We don't even mess with dealers, new or used since most have the same (or better) buying power as us and will typically stock their own. Your best chance is with used lots. Not a bad idea if you can make it happen. Even if you became a middle man making $1 or $2 per wiper, that is good money for very little work. I wouldn't be surprised if after an order or 2 they call and get the same pricing as you and just order them direct. Definately worth the effort while you are visiting their lot anyway. If they don't want to buy volume, check the wipers and sell them sets whenever you can. Give them good wholesale pricing and they will probably go for it.
Just to give you an idea, we average about 5 sets a day from our shop. (repair and replacements). Some days more than 10. We make $10+ plus per set, that is an extra $50 to $100 cash per day. Keeping in mind that it takes about 2 minutes of work!! Well worth the effort. But, you have to SELL them!!!

I dont think many used car lots are waiting to buy w/shield wiper blades for their cars.LOL I have been around these lots for most of my life and they are not going to buy anything that they dont have too.Your retail type customer would be entirly a different situation IMHO.......

We tried wiper blades and just could not sell them. I had over $400 in wiper inventory that just gathered dust. Tried to upsell, even had an attractive display at our stationary site. I have found keeping cold sodas and snacks on hand is a good upsell though - especially when it is midsummer.
