What happens if you drill too far?

Post by kingmonkey »

What can happen to the glass if you drill too far and hit the plastic in the middle? That happened to me today and I was a little worried that I might have messed the windshield up. Does it lose structural integrity or something?

I would say YES. By drilling into the PVB you comprimised the integrity. To what degree I could not answer.

lots of people drill to the lam then stop with every chip others just a burp if the lam is damaged the repair wont be as invisible but if you filled it right the repair should be good just not ideal looking

It's not the end of the world. Just make sure you don't use any heat when that happens.

No reason to be drilling that deep in the first place but if the repair is completed with a good fill I don't believe you have compromised the structural integrity to any level of concern.

you might get a laugh out of this...my first day back from training my brother in law brought his car over to get his window repaired..I was a little nervous and had a new drill bit and drilled straight thru the glass..it happened so quick!...I told him he didn't need to use the airconditioner
