Mini BullsEye
Mini BullsEye
I have had a few cracks that have continued past the mini bullseye that I made. I attribute this to too much pressure on the inside with the crackjack.
Has anybody else experienced the crack running through or around your mini bullseye?

Re: Mini BullsEye
Are you positive you have reached the end of the crack where you drill and pop the bullseye? Too much pressure could of course be the issue, but usually its just that the drill wasn't quite to the end of the crack, which is sometimes difficult to locate.

I have not used crack jacks for over ten years and before that only a very few times, why do you need them? I would say that with sufficient pressure a crack will cetainly run through a mini bullseye even when popped right on the end of a crack. Until it is filled of course and this should change things.

How far from the end of the crack do you start drilling? There are a couple of factors that can cause a crack to run past the bullseye. If you are putting any type of pressure from the inside while you are drilling this is probably the reason why you are having this problem. If the glass is hot to the touch this will also cause the crack to run past the bullseye. If this is the case you will have to allow the glass to cool down before you drill.

Yeah I had one like that the other day, ran past/through my bullseye. I think I had to re-drill another end to the thing. I always drill the hole in order to pop just past the visible end of the crack, up to an 1/8" past. Somebody told me that a long time ago, and it seems to work most of the time.

Re: Mini BullsEye
I pop about 1/8 inch past but sometimes when it is unstable it will still run past the end. I still will fill the whole thing and set up the resin. Then, when I'm done setting it up if it was that unstable I'll drill another hole and pop, then drill two more on either side a little closer to the end of the crack about on the edge of the bullseye. like a little arrowhead. Then fill this all and cure again. I don't know if this really is necessary but it just seems reasonable that capturing the end of the crack in a bunch of resin should prevent it from moving. Or at least reduce the likelihood of a crackout.

Is the second hole you drill also 1/8" from tip of runner then once you pop you drill two more holes upstream from the bullseye on either side of the runner? Is this more or less right? Do you pop the holes to either side? Is this little triangle hole configuration aesthetically pleasing when finished?

It is important that you drill just ahead ( approx 1/8" ) but not behind the end of the crack. Sometimes the end of the crack is almost invisible, especially when you have a pair of old eyes like I have. I use a Jeweller's Loupe to pinpoint the end of the crack, at the same time ( if possible) applying a small amount of flexing pressure from the inside of the screen.
