What type of alcohol is being used? Denatured or isopropyl? Does it matter? Thanks!

ISOPROPYL works fine and is much cheaper that denatured

An update from yesterday:
Today I restored an 01 BMW 325I and an 03 Camry and they both turned out perfectly. I made the following changes to what I had done several days ago.

1) Put new Helmsman in my measure and pour bottle in my truck.
2) Used Yellow-x in the beginning and at the end of the buff process.
3) Used a pure buffing compound not one with polish in it.
4) Used alcohol after the last application of yellow-x.
5) Dried the lenses with my heat gun just before applying the 1:1 mix.
6) Worked in the shade.

The 1:1 mix flowed on the lens like hot butter with no lines or bubbles and NO tanish brown streaks!! I am not sure which of the above changes solved my problems or maybe it was a combination of all of it but I do know I got GREAT results today. Thanks for all your time and patients last night BEN!!

No problem.I knew it had to be a step or product problem.Just some times you have to pay your dues to get it right.I have been doing lens in a business for over 2 years and played with the process for a year before that and believe me I have made all of the mistakes.I am glad to put you on the right track and wish I had knew someone to save me time and headaches.Just pass it on!!

Also make sure that your sealer urethane is in a tin/metal can!You can buy at a paint/hardware store. This will keep it from turning on you before you use it up.A plastic or glass bottle for some reason seems to make it turn dark before its applied and drys.Just a passing thought.

I have started using 2000 grit on a small flexible sanding block for my final sand out and really think it is even better then before and makes the final buff even more crystal clear.

Could the type of cup (Dixie) I'm using to mix my 1:1 final coat, effect my outcome? Today I work on 5 series BMW's headlights. I followed every step and when I mixed my 1:1 coating I used a Dixie cup. The headlights started to streak again while drying. I removed the coating with mineral spirits and dried the lenses. I went back to my truck and got a plastic cup and the results were perfect. I looked in the Dixie cups and there is a wax lining in the cup to make it hold liquid and I think the minerals spirits may have dissolved some of that wax and I then applied to the lenses. Any thoughts?

Yes its the WAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get the small paper with no wax!!! that you use in the bathroom dispensers.I think that they are just 3-4 oz size.Man you have run the litany of problems but have probably learned what not to do from now on.Wax is BAD news when used with any paint type products. You have really paid your dues on this one LOL.

Thanks Ben. I have thrown those cups away and I am off to Wally World to get bathroom cups with NO WAX! Man...what a comedy of errors I have made but maybe this will help someone else do it right the first time.

I picked up where a buddy of mine left off in the Headlight Restoration business, he had a few bottles of the Dvelup 2 part clear left. I'm getting close to the end of the first bottle, so I bought a can of the Helmsman SPAR urethane, to give it a shot. As others have mentioned, it was light brown in color. It made no mention of Marine on the can, just Indoor/Outdoor. I tried it on a test light, and it left a bit of a cloudy film on application. It's the green can, like what you would see here http://www.idealtruevalue.com/servlet/the-152593/Detail . Also, what do you use to keep from pouring the stuff everywhere when mixing in either paper cups, or in a bottle? I thought about maybe buying a turkey baster, if I can figure out how to make the product work.

Sorry for the ramble.
