Crack in Windshield

Post by cwin »

Can a windshield with no cracks or chips, crack if there is a person leaning against the windshield on the hood and a person taps lightly on the indside of the windshield? Normal weather temps, no snow or ice.
Thank you

It is an interesting question. Yes, in my opinion it can crack. Just out of my own curiosity, would any answer to this question possibly have any legal effect?
In other words; did it happen to you as a car owner? Or were you as a repairer involved in something like this?

But did it crack because someone leant on it or someone tapped it.

Hi its very unlightly the screen would crack .A windscreen can take alot of force either pushing from the inside or the outside .The only way it would crack is if there was damage in the black band which was not visable or if you was leaning on a side trim.

Any glass is subject to break under stresses........even those that are not seen but are invoked in the manufacturing process due to many many reasons that most people would never consider.

When I worked at a Chrysler dealer, we used to get customers all the time complaining of a stress crack and it should be under warranty. In EVERY case, if you ran a ball point pen, or a probe along the crack, there was always a nick in the glass. Sometimes, you could not even see it, but the pen or probe would feel it. In my opinion from what little experience I have in WSR and the ton of experience I have from years as a Nissan Tech, and Dodge service advisor, it probably has to have some sort of a nick in it somewhere.
