Just starting my own WSR business

Post by heezybeezy »

I've been in the w/s business for around 8 yrs now and am going to start my own repair business. For starters I am going to stick with just cash customers and eventually work into the networks that I love so much. My question is when you do the insurance jobs you need the Liabilty Ins and all that, what do you need if you're just doing cash? Do you need tax forms even though I won't charge tax? Do you need Liabilty? I want it to work so that if a customer wants to be reimbursed for my work, the ins. co. won't give them a hard time. That's my biggest concern and to show that I am a legitimate company. What do I need to do? Any advice is appreciated!

heezybeezy, to answer your questions in a proper fashion, it would certainly help us if you would share some more information with us. A good start would be to leave some more info in your members' profile. The tax related matters for example simply depend on your state (or country). Insurance is a must at all times, no matter your location. You've been in the ''w/s business for around 8 yrs'' (quote)...would you mind telling whether that was repairs or replacements? I do not intend to be offensive here, but from what I have seen in the past, many replacement guys could do with a proper repair training. Last but not least; you ask what you need to do..... in this business you really need to perform high quality repair work. Without a high quality repair, you may as well forget all the other points such as how to reimburse the work etc. Why not going cash to start of with? Cash is king today!

I am certified repair specialist through my current company, and we do both replacements and repairs. I know to make customers happy you need to do good repairs so they are satisfied. That still isn't really answering my question. Other than tax forms & liabilty ins what else do I need to do to be a legitimate business aside from the workmanship? I'll fill in my profile here shortly.

Many things, some obvious, others you probably don't even realize, are important to be a legitimate business. It depends on your budget, you can go as crazy as you like but don't worry, it doesn't have to be all that costly. In general it would be things like a corporate look (such as clothing, a decalled van or truck, stationary, order forms), a neat representing vehicle (inside and out!), a membership with the local chamber of commerce, an editorial (and perhaps even an advert) in your local paper or magazine, being a good supportive citizen to your local community and last but not least, register your business with Golden/Yellow Pages, Telephone directories etc. All these things will add to your professialism and credibility. It is a lot of things you should consider and do. Success!

Pfff, how could I be so silly and forget to mention the NWRA.....! You should consider joining them, I am all for supporting them -we are a long time member. There are many others with a different opinion, I know and that's just fine, but this opinion is mine.

Just starting my own WSR business

I started my own Windshield Repair Business. I have been in the auto industry since 1990. I got set up with with the insurance companies. How do I bill them if I am in a parking lot doing the work. Does the customer have to call them or do I call them and get permission to do the job.

The insurance companies you signed up with can answer all your questions concerning their billing procedures. They all differ a bit.

Also I just typed "Insurance Billing" into the search window in the upper right corner of the page and it gave me 425 matches. I would be willing to bet you can find some information there. The insurance issue has been covered before.
