Chip or Chunk?

Post by GLASSTIME »

We have recently witnessed a large number of damage turning out to be a whole new "Breed" of "Chips"
Or you maybe there just "Chunks" taken out of the glass.

There doesn't seem to be "Pockets" of air, P.O.I. Ect.
So we usually clean, apply pit resin & cure.

Just curious if anyone does a number of these or do you services this type of damage at all?
Also we usually charge a small amount to perform this type of WSR due to the less amount of tools required.
Being we donot typically file this nature or "Breed" of "Chip w/ clients insurance.

As you know, we focus on fleets -it's all we do. And we find two, maybe three of this type of damages per year.
Usually we don't touch those, pit filling something like this is, in most situations, just a cosmetic thing.
Last year we did only one, the diameter was a little over 1''.
I found that very same truck in the customers' yard a few weeks ago and the result looked awfull.
In fact it was so awfull that we removed all the resin to return to the old situation with no resin at all.
So why did we fill this surface void in the first place?
Just to please the truck driver, his wiper leaves a streak, caused by the void, and drivers normally don't like that.

I would never do work like this on a passengers' car, no matter the size of the 'surface chip'.

Also; there is no need because from a technical point of view, this is not a damage, there's no danger not doing it, it is just a blemish.

A coworker of mine has a later model Chevrolet pickup and he went to adjust the mirror the other day. The mirror broke off the windshield along with a chunk of glass. Anybody know of a fix for this?
Thanks,
Bob

You can get the glass off the mirror button with a torch or heat gun and a putty knife. If you are careful you may be able to get the glass off in one piece and glue it back in place with repair resin or rear view mirror adhesive. If not you can fill the hole with plate glass resin or pit resin, cure, scrape and polish to get a smooth surface again. Rather than glue the mirror back on the same spot I prefer to move it to the side about an inch so it is glued to solid glass again. The mirror will hide the original spot so it will not even be noticed and one inch is not enough to affect the viewing area. Just be sure it does not interfere with the visors when they are down. I have glued the button back on the original spot without any problems in the past, but always figured it was better to be on solid glass.

If you use the same mirror button be sure it is very clean and smooth before you reattach it to the glass. I always sand mine off with a belt sander but that is probably overkill. We used to sell an excellent rear view mirror adhesive but the activator has a limited shelf life and we didn't sell enough of it to justify the inventory. Any auto parts store will have either Locktite or Permatex rear view mirror adhesive. It is not as fast or strong as the product we used to sell, but it will work if you let it dry for a few hours before reattaching the mirror. Ours used to set in about 60 seconds and you could hang the mirror immediately, but the store brands don't seem to hold if you attach the mirror to quickly.

I used to do a dozen or so a week at $5 a pop when I had my shop.
