Broken Bur! Poor Repair!
I had one of my dealer accounts URGENTLY STRESS to me that they sold a unit and the WS has a star in it!
SO I arrive ready to do the MAGIC so you can say!
Only to discover a Carbide Bur broken off into the void.
Theres no telling how long this Bur has been in the void. I could tell through some talking with Korey that it indeed looked as if it had been attempted to be repaired and that it had been filled.
My theroy is this.
Whoever did the repair, filled it, couldnt get 3 legs to fill at all, figured they would drill it open some and broke the bit then tried to fill again.
This is the first time Ive seen this so I was lost on what to do.
I didnt have tweezers or a magnet.
I do recall a topic on here of a customer stating that a tech broke a bit off in his WS yet left it there!
I did however try and drill into at 2:00 and still was unsuccessful of removing the bur. This thing was STUCK!

Re: Broken Bur! Poor Repair!
I've actually broken off a couple bits since I've been in the biz and the main reason was the battery powered dremel died on me as I was drilling and it snapped off in the pit. I took a smaller bit and drilled around the area until it came loose and I took my little magnet and it popped out!
On the other hand, I've been called to do a repair and found a part of a bit, but I didn't touch the repair, because it couldn't be fixed.

Re: Broken Bur! Poor Repair!
I have noticed on here that alot of techs speak of using the magnet!
What size magnet are we talking about?
Would this be something the Home Depot or Hardware store may carry?
Thanks!

The scribes that come in the new Delta Kits do not have a magnet. The old scribes were carbide so you had to be very careful not to scratch the glass, but they did have a magnet. We still sell them if you are interested, but you can pick up a far more powerful magnet at your local hardware store for just a couple of bucks. Breaking drill burs should be a very, very, very rare occurrence. I only remember it happening one time and that is back when we used to drill to the laminate. That was probably 20+ years ago. Use sharp burs, drill carefully and you should not have a problem.

Re: Broken Bur! Poor Repair!
You know that could have the issue as well..........when mine broke, they could have dull. I knew they needed to be sharp, but my little girl dumped my new & used bits and got them all mixed up....NICE HUH
I'm not sure if there is a difference, but there has been times that I have ran out of bits and I had to go to a local company here in town and buy some from them ( Equalizer ), and I don't really like talking bad, but some of the stuff they sell is NOT that good and it's rather cheap or cheap feeling......I guess that should be a sign

Re: Broken Bur! Poor Repair!
When I retired I opened an amusement park in Henderson and later a upscale candyshop. I sold the candy store in 1999. I lost my shorts on that investment. I walked around with candy in my pockets and passed it out to people that I met along my daily travels. So they called me the candyman. I use to play the song sung by Sammy Davis on my store speakers candyman. I will let you know how Eugene Tng turns out.
