It is more time consuming but it is also more lucrative.

I spend around 45 minutes per vehicle from start to finish. About half of that time is spent taping off the car and cleaning up before applying the UV coat. Some of the guys in our shop are faster than I am, but still generally spend at least a half hour per vehicle.

We make a little more per job than windshield repair and the material cost is a little higher, but the profits are about the same for us assuming you are only working on one chip per car and one car at a time when doing windshield repair. Where windshield repair is sometimes more profitable is when we are repairing multiple chips or multiple cars at the same time. With windshield repair you can cut your time considerably by using multiple bridges, but with headlight restoration you don't save much time by working on more than one car at a time.

Its been almost 9 months since I started HLR: My price has now increased to an average of $50 -$60 per HLR: I charge extra for Fog lamps & rear light cleaning & polishing: When I do a special for the chamber or ad, I may throw in Rear light cleaning & polishing as free to attract customers. I also offer a 10% discount to seniors and students. I live in a very poor area of my state and this price works well for me. Other areas get much higher fees than this. My HLR has been a plus since day one. My WSR has not done as well. I've invested in three yellow page directories for three counties within a 30 mile area. That will be distributed within the next 3 weeks to more than 200K homes & retailers. I also will be on more that 100 search engines by April for my zip code & local vicinity. All of this was for a price under $540 total for 12 months. You must be willing to negotiate, because the price was almost 3 times that amount when I started pricing ads etc... I was putting flyers on vehicles that were in need of HLR or WSR in shopping centers and getting very little results. My detail shops and inspection stations are producing some traffic. Also very small car dealers are soliciting my services, as a result of the jobs I've done for customers for the detailing shops. Iam sure my investment will generate new customers. 1/4 of the yellow page ads will be in an area that has a medium income of more than 100K which will be helpful and only 20 minutes away. My reputation for good results and my uniform seems to be a plus for my referals for the HLR. Good luck with your business.
