Great 1st day!!!!! Small bummer too...

Post by stihlcarven »

Today I launched my windshield repair business full throttle. Hit a few car dealers....found one that had me fix a crack on his personal car covered under insurance....I did a great job so he is letting me repair every car on his lot that needs it...15 total windshields...I did some today and will finish up tomorrow....thank God cause I am broke!!!!! a little better than $500 for 2 days work!! I'd say a start in the right direction...here's the bummer....I thought the glass bottles my probond came in was uv proof....they sit in the top of my kit in foam and I had it on hoods all day...the one I was using was safe...the new unopened bottled cured about a centimeter deep inside the bottle....a bit freaked out..not sure if I have enough pro bond to complete the job...I am wondering if anyone has done this and if so were you able to salvage the uncured resin underneath the cured? regardless of how stupid I can be..today was a good day..

Hmmmm, that doesn't sound right. Did you call and talk to Mindy this afternoon? I thought I heard her mention something about resin being cured in a bottle, which is pretty rare so it caught my attention.

The glass bottles are UV resistent, just as the plastic bottles are, but not UV proof.

Did you leave your tool box open in the direct sun all day?

What was the temperature?

Did you check both bottles before going out today and both were liquid?

Is this resin that came with the used kit you purchased?

You said the bottle was unopened. Does that mean it is still attached to a shrink wrapped card? If not it could have been opened and contaminated.

I'll PM you with my cell number. Give me a call at your earliest convenience. If it was still in a sealed package it is covered under warranty.

I place a small ,empty tin can upside down over my resin bottles as they sit in the foam holders of my toolbox.
The can is about 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches high and keeps any stray sunlight off the resin bottles.

Good idea Mr. Bill. The more protection the better. However after talking to Stihlcarven, in this instance I think we identified the problem, and I don't think it had anything to do with him leaving his tool box open.

The bottle of Premium Bond in question was purchased as part of a used windshield repair system so there is no way to know how old it was, or if it had every been opened before. In fact we we can't even be sure that the bottle was not filled with another brand of resin! Never the less, we did have a few issues with Premium Bond bottle contamination a few years back that caused a dozen or so customers to experience a similar problem, so it is possible that this bottle was out of that old batch. We issued a recall to the original purchasers and replaced that resin for free so I will do the same for Stihlcarven.

When Delta Kits sells a used windshield repair system we always include fresh resin, but if you purchase a used Delta Kits windshield repair system from a private party it's buyer beware, so that should always be a consideration when negotiating a price on a used system.

Brent how can you tell that your resin has been contaminated?I have had a problem recently with a few repairs.NO matter what i would do I would have a little black that would keep coming back.I changed bottles of resin and my problem went away.I do pour my resin from liter bottles.I am going to use new bottles next pour. These were very easy (do in your sleep repairs)repairs,no batwings or anything bad. This was about 5 repairs in a row.My tip was in very good shape and I change nothing in my routine. Thanks for you help Brent.

Once the resin is poured into small bottles it's pretty tough to know if the resin is contaminated without extensive testing, and frankly we so seldom have problems that it's less expensive to replace a bottle here and there if that is even a possibility. I have to tell you however, when we replace resin for someone and they send back the resin they think is defective or contaminated, we almost never find anything wrong with it. In fact we generally just use it for a training class and have no problems with it.

Over the years we have learned to take precautionary measures to keep bottles from being contaminated prior to filling and we never re-fill bottles, so it's pretty rare we find anything on our end. In the field contamination typically happens when bottles are re-used, dirty droppers are used to dispense resin, excess resin from a repair is put back into a bottle, resins are mixed, etc.

The problem you have described would normally not sound like a contamination problem to me, but if you were consistently having a problem and then tried a different bottle and the problem went away it is certainly a possibility, especially if you are doing any of the above. New bottles are the way to go in my opinion. They only add a few cents to each repair. Be sure you store your bottles and droppers in a sealed, dust free environment prior to filling. You might try doing two similar repairs side by side on practice glass. If the resin you suspect is bad does not perform as well as a fresh bottle you should not use it.

Thanks Mr. Bill for the advise...sounds like a good thing to do, especially when its resin not in use and in open sunlight....I also wanna thank Brent and Delta for sending me out a new Magnibond....I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. I'm glad I found you guys. Ya know? One of the things that I took for granted when working for someone else repairing windshields is the support that was available when ever I needed it...it was, after all, their company and making me successful was making them also successful...when you strike out on your own there is nobody besides yourself who is motivated to your own success...I am glad I found the forum and you fellas at DELTA, it has taken the edge off the things that need to be accomplished before starting your own business. It is one thing to be able to properly inject and cure windshield damage....it is quite another thing to put together the remaining 75% of the pie that is involved in operating and succeeding in your own business. I am just starting out, so I can't talk of success yet but I do have all my ducks in a row from a good location, pop up tents, great banners, ins. billing know how, good equipment, small business bank account, liability ins, even down to the invoices that I designed from information taken off the sample invoice I got off the forum....also several "little" things that needed to be in place are indeed in place thanks to info I gathered from people that post on the forum...thanks again all....may many repairs come your way....
