Friend of mine's, Windshield had a crack about 12 inch that started at the lower passenger side. She had taken it to a repair shop, They had drilled a hole at the crack to stop it,it was about 6 inch from the start. Just a drill. no mini bull. So the crack started again and just went around the drill spot, for another 6 inch.
So I did a mini bull, at the end of the crack, and mini bull at the drill point. i let the resin go about 1/4 inch on each bullseye.
I dont like going over 3 inch on a crack,
So what do you guys think...

What does this mean? "i let the resin go about 1/4 inch on each bullseye." Did you not fill the entire crack?

Re: Your opinion please
All the so called mini bull does is make sure your drill point connects with the crack obviosly they didnt connect pretty easy to tell if it did either resin flowed into it or not. Lots of replacement shops will do repairs but really dont have much training in it> Heard one last week telling a customer about putting special GLUE (resin) into a chip as far as the rest of your post im like Brent a little confused
Re: Your opinion please
The way i read that is that he made two bullseyes and let the resin flow into each about a 1/4 inch, leaving the crack inbetween the two bullseyes mostly unfilled. So it is now just a crack with no definate ends, like a crack segment???

So, your friends vehicle had a crack that was approximately 6 inches in length. She went to a shop and they proceeded to do the repair, and initially they drilled into the tip, but they didn't create a bullseye at the tip, therefore the drill hole didn't go the whole depth of the crack at the tip. Assuming at a later date/time, the repair came back and cracked out an additional 6" +/-.
So, at this point you attempted to repair the damage. You drilled and put a mini bullseye at the beginning of the "NEW" crack (the end of the first repair from the shop), and the end of the crack, right?
At this point, you proceeded to fill in the damage at each end and the crack only filled in about 1/4 of an inch at each end (the mini bullseye's).
So, when you were finished, the whole crack was still there and visible, except for 1/4" + 1/4" = 1/2" that actually filled in?
So, did you use your bridge to do the repair? Did you just put a few drops of resin at each end? What were you expecting the results to be?
When you stated that you don't like to do cracks larger than 3", I'm assuming that's what you mean, did you do this one because it was a friends vehicle?
So, I would like to help anyway I can, but I really would like to know what it is that you need, do you need some advice on how to repair a crack? Some pointers? Please let us know, and I'm certain someone will have some advice for you.
Take care...

Re: Your opinion please
My question is why did you not fill it all? Regardless of who owns the windshield it is extremely important to do every job properly or not at all in my opinion. Save your practise for the practise windshield. If you can answer some of the other guys questions we may be able to give you some more advice.
Re: Your opinion please
Yes ATX you got it right,
Yes, if it was not my friends, i would not have done the repair. Because of the size of the crack.
From what i read on the forum, guys will stop the crack' but not fill the entire crack, if very long.
Maybe i should have used this windshield as a demo, for larger cracks. but I did not want to mess up the window.
But in general, is letting the resin flow as far as I did, ok. or if the cracks are very long, just walk away from them.

Re: Your opinion please
If a crack is not completely filled it is certainly not repaired, anyone who might just stop a crack by drilling and popping is doing our trade a mis service. It is important when repairing a crack that it is completely filled, I would suggest. I feel very strongly about this as you can guess, even for a friend I will not do 1/2 a job or even less in this case.
I am confused by this sentence" Maybe i should have used this windshield as a demo, for larger cracks. but I did not want to mess up the window." Are you saying you could have done the job properly ? but for some reason did not do so.

Newbie question...
Is ONLY terminating the crack on each end without completely filling in the crack considered worthy of charging the customer for a repair?
