Perfect was a bit too strong for this subject and this forum. NO windshield repair is perfect. You will always be able to see a flaw in the damaged area.

I would have thought on such a small pit then the scrape method was even more important, less chance of pulling the pit out. I have never had a customer use a magnifying glass either, but it does not stop me using one.

I completely agree WSR is not rocket science.

It seems like Scraping is the preferred method. Silly me, I did not think of examining the finished pit with a magnifying glass. This weekend...I will drill 2 identical holes on my practice windshield, fill the pits with curing resin, cover with curing tabs, cure and then Scrape one and Slice the other.

Then place it in a weathering machine or leave outside for 3 months to see if there is any difference. I have given my reason in the previous posts as to why I fell scraping is the best method, mainly less aggressive therefore less likely to loosen the pit fill or even pull it out completely. Perhaps you would like to list the benefits of shaving a pit, I am always happy to learn I just like to have reasons.

My Side by Side Comparison Results

Post by robert n »

Setup:
This afternoon, using the FG-701 Bur, I drilled 2 holes (looked to be the same depth), filled and cured with pit resin and curing tabs for 14 minutes under the UV Lamp (yes, excessive, but I wanted to make sure the resin was fully cured).

Pits:
I Scraped (perpendicular) one using a new razor and the other I Sliced (not chopped) with another new razor.

Conclusion
Each was examined using a needle probe and a 5X magnifying visor before and after using the polishing compound. I could not see or feel a difference between the Scraped or Sliced pit.

Although my side by side test was not very "scientific" i.e. only done once, not performed using truly identical pits of different sizes and using computers or high powered microscopes in the analysis....I decided to keep using the Scraping technique

Computers or high powered microscopes in the analysis.....that's a good one. Here again this is not brain science or rocket surgery!

I am a scraper, and I like screenman's tip about moisture from glass cleaner holding the shavings together, I typically make sure my blade has some of the dripped resin on it so that the shavings stick to it & I am cleaning it up as well.

On another note, if ya'll ever notice me being rude, degrading, smart-alec in a mean way etc.... please call me on it! I want this forum to be a place where a frustrated beginner can come for not only answers, but also encouragement! :) I hope to do my part!

I completely agree WSR is not rocket science.
I like your attitude. You seek excellence, not just what you can "slip by" a customer that does not check carefully or "know." YOU "know." Also, brain surgery is also not rocket science. Our profession has some science involved and also a large scale of quality... it is good that some care enough to improve our craft! Good man!
