On the verge of starting a HLR and WSR business

Post by dnkies »

Thank you all for your responses to my prior post. I am at a crossroads in life and need to make a good decision to better my families life. I agree with you Candyman...you must live a good life to do well in this life... or the next. With that said, I am pretty set on starting my HRS and WSR business. I have the money tfor the start-up and some for operating capital. My question to you now is this:

I want to be properly trained and equipped for the job. Who and where should I get trained by and who and where can I get the best equipment and materials for the job?

Also, besides alot of hard work and pavement pounding the best ways to get a good jump start in this business are ????

I reallize this is a forum maintained by Delta Kits, but I want honest opinions. Thank you all.

In other words you want the short cut version to success in this business and what equipment to buy so you won't waste your time and money?

Hi Danny, I sat on the fence about investing in the Delta Kits H/L Restoration Kit for about a year. Although I am not breaking any sales records yet, I am very pleased with my decision to invest in the system. It is very user friendly and the results are amazing. It is a lot of fun when your customer's jaw drops when they see the end result. Also, I have had great support from the Delta Kits sales reps every time I need a question answered. Check out my post "my 4th job", those are the actual results. I wish you could see the other photos I have taken, they are too large for me to upload to the forum. From the very first set of headlights I restored to the one I finished today, the result is always the same "Awesome". I have limited experience with power tools but the metabo is easy to use. It is a great tool. If you have the funds, go for it. Just my 2 cents.

P.S. I wasn't going to do this, but I will post a couple of pics of the headlights I did today'

Good Mornig Dnkies! I looked at everything for weeks. I invested in a supplier that also trains. I have no regrets with my choice. I should have attended training sooner for the WSR portion. The HLR was easy. My first job turned out great. As I followed the instructions, I had my doubts about the product when the headlights still looked hazy after I polished them. After I applied the UV coating is when I discovered the WOW factor of the product. That was more than 300 HL sets ago and numerous rear lights. I learn from each job and I still discover new things as I do different makes and models of vehicles.
The product makes my job easier and the professional support I get from my supplier. Good Luck!

I started the exact business that you are considering and have done rather well. I was very fortunate that i was able to acquire a couple of headlight restoration accounts quickly. I was able to pay off all my expenses the first year and I didn't start until june of that year. I feel that there are a couple of things that are paramount
1) do high quality work ( above your competetion especially in both areas headlights and windshield. my point is that i feel you can spend a little extra time for superior results and charge a little more. You are building a reputation each time that will to future referrals.

2) be professional. present a professional image in dress, business cards, and signage. purchase magnetic signs for you vehicle with before and after pictures. these can be done at a local sign company susch as fastsigns for a small cost. I drive my vehicle a lot and get calls all the time while driving around town.

3) target your customers. - I I target the public 2 reasons, (1) The are willing to pay more than dealers and the referrals are stronger, (2)I feel thatHigher end vehicle owners plan on keeping their vehicles longer therefore, they can easily rationalize the cost. These owners are somewhat clickish and the word travel fast amongsame type owners ( Mercedes Benzs, BMW, Lexus, etc) I'm not excluding other owners but, i have not been as successful as among lower end diposal type vehicles.

4) pass out plenty of business cards with before and after pictures ( good quality photos) I'm finding out that people are holding on to these cards and eventually use them, I will eventually get calls from people that i gave cards to 1-2 years ago. Everywhere you go potential customers are all around you and guess what, everybody has the same problem with their headlights or they no somebody that does. Pass them out everywhere, shopping center, grocery store, malls, I feel the key is the approach to people. presnt yourself as somebody who is offering good advice, set the comfort zone quickly and don't pressure them for the job, they will call when they either have the money or when the time is right.

5) set yourself apart- educate your customers, make them understand what they are getting from you verses the competetion, I've come to know that everybody has or knows somebody who has gotten a botched job from somebody looking to make a quick buck and the problem is the lights will look good now but in a few months will look like they orginally did. develope a sales pitch that satisfies their concern now about quality but, also satisfies their concern long term in respect to the same.
I could go on, but, one thing that i would recommend is use only the clearcoat from Dekta, it's the best i've ever seen. It can make a beginner look really good and seperate you from the pack....Cmaster
