Business license or no?

Post by smcdonaldaz »

Just wondering what type of licensing is typically required if I run this out of my house in a service only capacity?

You will need to check local laws for that answer. State, City, and County governments. Where are you located?

Roo: In my city I need a license for any work performed inside the city limits. The county does not require one. The next county over requires a license and one for the larger cities in that county. If you are caught by law enforcement without one a fee of $100 plus can be levied. Some permits are only $25 per year while others are slightly higher. They were slack on enforcement, but now the cities are hurting for money, so the local PD and sheriff depts are looking for a Lic # on the service vehicles they spot in their area. Better be safe than sorry.

Normally in my area its called a business license. If you do work at your home, and you have an office, my city also requires a fire inspection with exit lights etc... Mainly its to ensure you have a tax ID . The cities here get a kick back from the state on sales/service taxes collected by the state. At the moment I dont have to collect a tax. The local barber shops and a few other service shops must pay a service tax as of last year.

I found that this morning. As a sole proprietor, and only providing a service, I need nothing as far as the state Dept of Revenue is concerned. I don't live in a city so I'm good there, just need to contact cities where I may do work to find out what they require but they mostly follow the DofR.
