Certifications

Post by SGT »

I created this thread as not to highjack another thread. Candyman asked...

No one ever ask for the information except the networks like SGC. I cant even list NWRA. Due to my work schedule, I prefer that they call me to schedule a job. I think that is one reason I dont get that many jobs for this area. They called and asked me if they could just send dispatches with a time and date to be repaired. If this was the only job I did everyday that would not be a problem. Has anyone else had the same phone or email request.
Candyman,

I wish I could say that either NWRA or NGA certification was giving me an edge in some way shape or form in my daily operations but to this point I can not. Do I think certifications are good? Well yes and maybe. What I mean is if a certification provides some level of recognized substance (ie. you can not work without it), carries misuse ramifications (ie. you loose your cert.), and is backed by a strong proactive governing body then yes. If it is a certification that does not really provide you with anything more than you could accomplish on you own without it, then maybe. At the end of the day I am pro certification. For me I know how hard I had to work to get my gov't licenses to work on aircraft. I think most people, when it comes to flying would perfer that the technician working on their airplane was certified. I know we are talking about cars and the same does not hold true here most of the time but I think certifications speak silently to those who do not know who you are and what you do. What do the certifications say "this individual is comitted to their profession and being professional, knows what they are doing and takes pride in there work and holds themselves to high standards. It provides the customer a certain level of comfort and confidence. That being said, having all the certs in the world does not mean you are worth your weight in salt.

So I have many certifications, some I proctect with every action as my life depends on them and the others (NWRA and NGA) I have for image purposes with the hopes that one day the bodies behind the certifications get other industry to sectors (ie. networks) to provide an advantage to thos who are certified. I know that was not a yes or no answer but it is an individual decision. At least the NGA certification is a lifetime cert.

Re: Certifications

Thanks SGT. I hold certifications in several fields also that require annual CEU credits to maintain that certification. Most customers look at my sleve, at the patches, and assume Iam a professional that has passed some sort of training for the work Iam doing on their vehicle. I already pay a small fortune to keep my certifications each year and the training required. One more will not break me. I got a email reference a confrence call on 11-30-10 by NWRA to discuss several things to include recertification. Thanks for the reply.
