Spring Hammer...Was it supposed to do that?

OK! First let me say the NEW Spring Hammer from Delta is AMAZING!

I had a Small Star with a 3" vertical run. I drilled at the end and went to pop a mini bullseye and when I pressed to release it mad a Mini. But it also caused a 1" leg to shoot to the right. I was thinking that maybe I could have had the Hammer at an angle and that could have caused this.

Just checking to see if anyone else has had this issue??

Never had that happen. Do you think maybe you didnt drill deep enough?

Is it possible that the crack went beyond where you drilled? Sometimes the end of a crack is not easily visable.

Not to state the obvious, but considering the characteristics of our chosen substrate (glass) you have to be prepared for anything whenever you apply impact pressure. Glass is brittle. It breaks. Sometimes unexpectedly in unexpected ways. You probably did nothing untoward. Experiences like this are just part of the larger equation.

After much thought and trying to simulate every possible factor before making a final decision as to what might of happened. I am going with the fact that I had the Hammer at a slight angle and thus this is why the leg had shot out from the mini. I always try my darnest to tap into the end of those crack's but sometimes as mentioned they are definately hard to judge!

Chad, I'm sure you already know this but I'll say it again for all those unfamiliar with this tool. The tip is sized to be used with the FG701 bur but you will still need to rotate the drill as you are drilling to get the correct sized hole at the surface. We've tried the next size up without rotating but although the hole size is then correct, it still does not work as well. If you don't rotate the drill the top of the hole is still just a tad tight with the FG701 which can cause the glass to chip at the surface or even cause a crack to run, although the latter is quite rare.

Some technicians ignore our advice on this and use different sized burs or don't rotate the drill but we have done a lot of testing and anything smaller or of a different shape greatly increases the chance of a mishap. We are often asked why we did not use a smaller tip so we could use a smaller bur. We tested every possible combination we could think of and the tip we settled on worked the best when matched with the FG701 and the rotation method. Smaller holes and points often resulted in tiny fractures in the glass rather than a perfect bullseye.
