Yes,every crack out I have had (3) have occurred on hot glass, and for the record every customer got a free windshield or I wouldn't sleep at night.
Create shade (umbrella),open all the doors and wipe some alcohol (iso,methyl,...) soaked on a cloth around the chip and you should be able to cool the windshield around the damage down to the ambient temperature within two or three minutes.
Then you should be able to repair as normal,without unnecessary drilling,flowering and things going "pop".
