STAR BREAK GONE BAD

Post by Clearveiw »

Did a star break last week got the dreaded call to day it spread.
Just broke the 300 repair barrier. this was one of the smaller stars lately. dried out nicely. looked good from inside outside every angle I looked at it before I pulled the bridge. customer wasn't upset at all. I on the other hand not happy :x . Any advise on drilling would be appreciated more so on connecting it after drilling lie pushing from inside or outside. THANKS

Hi Clear,

So it was just a normal repair, that you'd be happy with normally?

Was there anything about it at all that you had concerns about?
Any advise on drilling would be appreciated more so on connecting it after drilling like pushing from inside or outside.
Connecting it? So it was a crack you were repairing that ran - or a star break?

Cheers,

Pommy

This is what I use to pop bullseyes.
A thick sewing machine needle held in a pin vise, which has been sawn in half.
I use a 0.025 drill to make the hole in the glass.
If I see a leg which is not connected, I drill sideways just a little and I hold the needle at a 45 degree angle inside the drill hole and tap just the unconnected leg to open it.
The tapper is a spoon with a nickel glued into it to add weight.
If you drill the hole to the correct depth, you just need a very light tap to fracture the glass under the surface and open the leg.
I find that crack legs fill very easily this way.
I don't like the spring hammer because it is too big and it whacks the glass to hard.
