Desertstars,

I keep seeing your post where you love using that 50/50 alcohol/ water mix. Just one question? Now are you using Absolute as a mix or saving some money with Smirnoff or Mohawk:roll: Maybe this finally explains why your always so happy and under Jeff's continued
censorship. Just having fun with you buddy! Somebody has too

Actually, I started using the 50/50 mix after reading some of your post. Works great! I also started using the baby oil after experiencing a couple fallen bridges and UV lamp bulb repalcements while working on fleet trucks. Never had a suction failure again after the baby oil. Thanks!

I do however have one serious question to ask? When you heat or dry out the repair and imediately spray with this 50/50 mix....are you ever concerned with shocking the glass? Reason I ask is because on a practice shield I tried spraying right after heating and experienced run out on a star. Just curious :-k

Desertstars, They nolonger use the extension off of the tripod they now have a fixed corner tool and an adjustable one, each has 2 suction cups and an adjustment bolt opposite the injector. I have the latter style , which works ok but is sometimes hard to get a good seal against the glass in some cases.

StarQuest

As you saw, it's pretty risky to spray anything on a hot break like that. I don't think the glass gives a rip if it's H2O or alcohol or pepsi.

After heating to dry out a chip, it's best to let it cool all by itself, at least for a couple minutes.

As for cooling normal summer "hot windshields" I have had one crack on a 100* day using room temp water, after opening the windows and putting it under shade. It still cracked. But it was a star right about 2" form the top edge of the w/s.

Othr than that, I haven't had any problem with using lots of H2O... spray bottles and soaked rags.

I like this thread. it has given this new guy some real hands on info about the different companies the the equipment they sell. I have been mainly lurking and reading all i can here to learn this WRS biz. it will all begin to make more sense to me when I get my equipment and start using it.
Jeff thank you for putting this together. When I first started to consider doing WRS I looked all over the net at the diff comapnies and if there were any forums. I found a few old and not active one and some how stumbled here. What a gold mine. Thanks to all of you that cotribute, both the seasoned repair tech's and the new guys like me that ask the questions I had not thought to ask. I hope to bring my brand of help along as I persue this biz.

PS...can we get spell check Jeff?????? lolololololol

Thanks for your reply Mark, that was the reason for my post in the first place. I thought it would eliminate a bunch of repetitive questions and the people here who do this for a living have a better idea of what they are dealing with when they try to help you.

I am an electronic tech as my full time job and I base my answers to the person and experence level they have, with some guys I can get right to the point and others need a more detailed explanation. Glad to see someone took this post for face value.

I never get insulted, Starquest.

I just get even.

I hope I get this right and as specific as possible in order to eliminate too much confusion.

But, I'm always open to argument or other suggestions.

I cool down the windshield from the INSIDE after any NEED to heat the w/s in the first place.

I flex from both inside or outside BEFORE I heat and only heat as a LAST resort.

Flexing is usually the best technique and then proceed.

Sure.

One can use water or coke or whatever to cool the windshield. Use diet Pepsi for all I care.

Just don't use beer.

Leaves less for me.

I use a 50/50 combo of alcohol and water simply because a straight solution of alcohol could be too dramatic and consequently cool the superheated w/s so quickly that it spreads the damage.

I also use that combo on the outside of the windshield before attempting to drill or to even set the bridge on a hot day to help lower the temp. If I can't lay the back of my hand on the windshield over the repair area without feeling discomfort, it's too hot to attempt any repair other than a simple bullseye.

Of course, don't spray directly on or in the repair area. Spray around the circumference. With this solution, it will draw the heat AWAY from the area of damage.

Did you say Smirnoff or did you mean Absolute, StarQuest?

Other than Bull Moose or Sneaky Pete, I drink nothing served to me from a brown paper bag.

One special note for doing chip repair in the hot sun. GET SOME SHADE. I carry a 10 x 10 ez-up tent and I always through it up over the car every time I do a windshield repair if it is over 90 degree's outside and I will let the windshield cool down for about 5 minutes but just getting it out of the direct sun will cool it down a lot. I also open all the doors so air can circulate through the car. Besides when it is 104 degree's outside I am glad to have a shade with me. :)

About the EZ Up, is that the little blue pill everyone is talking about???
I know Costco has carried them in the past I will look into Sams club tomorrow to see if they carry one. When I looked at Costco they were under $200 , All white with full sides.

PS Is anyone near Newark DE? I will be flying into Philly this week and staying for 12 days, will have a couple days to devote to WRS if there are any techs in that area.
