Although we no longer do crack repairs, when we did do them and the ins company had no policies for paying for them, we would simply bill as though it was multiple repairs. Normally it would be a max of 3 repairs which is the most they would pay for with the exception of Liberty Mutual which pays a flat $75 regardless of the # of repairs. Was this acceptable or correct? I do not know? I do know that we still saved the ins companies significant amounts of money, kept the customers happy and it also made our crack repairs worth the time, effort and profitable. Winning deal for everyone!

Karen. From the sound of it, the windshield was not cooled down before you started. That didn't help matters by a long shot.

My rate is the same as Sydfloyd 44's for cracks. I charge the max of three repairs.

In regard to starman's question, one doesn't need to describe the damage to the nth degree on an insurance submitted invoice. In fact, I do not describe it at all.

I do however make a practice of noting on the invoice WHERE on the w/s the damage is located even if it is within the so-called "critical" area. (I:E. 2inches horizontal from driverside edge; 4inches verticle from bottom.) I want to preclude any future argument or claim by the insured that the original damage spread or that a new "ding" is NOT in fact just that.

In my experience, the overwhelming majority of people don't try that kind of dishonesty. But, I'm fully prepared to shoot out of the saddle those who think it's a bright idea.

Hello- On this particular repair I haven't billed insurance yet(will do tomorrow) It was one that the customer knew it may not work due to the fact she saw it running on her way to work that morning and it was understood that I would try but with no guarantees. The windsheild was in direct sun and pretty hot and I covered them to cool them off (maybe wrong, I don't know). I don't know if I should bill insurance for a smaller crack or for three pits or not at all. I guess I should get something for my time and effort and it did stop the crack. I want to be honest with the insurance companies and can't decide how to bill them....Thanks for the input,

crack spread

That vertical crack-fill procedure brings up a salient point, graybeard.

One that has interested me for a long time.

If the crack originated from the bottom, I drill the top end and fill from the top. My thinking is to use gravity flow as much as possible and the pressure will force air out of the original ding at the bottom.

If the crack originated from the top of the w/s, I drill the bottom end and fill from the original ding at the top thereby using gravity again as much as possible.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. However, I'm always looking for a better way to perform difficult repairs and am not averse to better ways to accomplish that.
