windshield crack by unknow reason

Post by young707 »

I am in San Francisco bay area, own a 98 BMW E38 740iL.

I found a 6 inches long fish tail crack in front windshield from the center top from the top edge, near the rear view mirror.
Did not see any impact marking. This is not caused by extreme cold.

Should I get this crack repair by those vacuum glue type of job?
Or, should I replace the entire wind shield. How much does this replacement part & work cost?

thank you.

Replace. Especially if there is no damage to be found. If it's from frame stress or a defect, a repair will not be permanent IMO.

Your model has the possibility of a couple of options: Heated and with Rain Sensor. I would expect to pay upwards of $400-500.

thanks. should I consider a used windshield? Would it works? Will it be cheaper?
I check the windshield, I did not see any sensor anywhere, at least on the visiable areas.

I am in North San Jose / Milpitas / Fremont areas.
I am seeking 98 BMW 740iL front windshield replacement. Use if in good condition is fine.
Please tell me any windshiled shop I should get contact with? Thank you?

Although I'm a repair guy only, replacing with used glass is rare if ever because removing windshields usually breaks them and if they are successfully removed, quite often they are sand pitted and not worth using as a replacement. Replacement guys - correct me if I'm wrong.

A google search of "windshield repair San Jose" brought me the following results (if the link works).

https://www.google.com/search?q=windshi ... channel=sb

My general recommendation is shop for price by phone and select an independent shop that has been in business at least 5 years. Have it done at the shop - they have the best tools and environment and if there ever is a problem with excessive wind noise or leakage, you've got a shop to go back to instead of trying to track down a pickup truck.
