colored resin

Post by candyman »

Screenman! Does colored resin give a better appearance on tinted windscreens. I see on some of the sites resin that is colored. What are they used for and when do you use them. Korey if you see this, maybe you can tell me and others the answer. I've repaired 2 windshields this week that were very dark. My repair was fine. looking out the glass I can see some of the skeleton and its very clear. I was wondering if the tinted resin would blend in more with the dark tinted glass.

I have found the in most screens the main tint is in the PVB tinted resin will make no difference in this case, reason being once the tint has washed out of the PVB you cannot put it back. Try this get 2 piece of tinted glass and place on top of each other and observe, now use a clear resin to glue them together, hey presto they still look the same a before you glued them.

I did try tinted resins in testing and found they made no difference to any repair I carried out.

We sell tinted resins for those who prefer them, but I agree with screenman, they have made no difference in my completed repairs. We've tried amber, green, blue, grey, and a variety of different shades of each, all with the same result.

Brent
Is it a valid theory that because clear resin is injected beneath the tinted glass that it will take on the tint of the parent windshield?
If true, then would a tinted pit resin, since it sits on the surface, look better if it had a tint to it?
Would three or four variations of tinted pit resin make for a better repair without the pit resin patch that some customers object to?

In theory I think that makes sense but in my experience it's difficult, if not impossible, to tell the difference if colored pit resin is used or clear pit is used. I think that is partly because there are a lot of different varieties of tints, making it impossible to have an exact match. A couple of other things to keep in mind is that that the inner layer of glass is also tinted so clear over color is still color. Add that to the fact that the surrounding glass is colored and the fact that most pits do not consist of a big open hole all the way to the PVB, and the difference is imperceptible. If I can't tell the difference I'm certain my customers won't be able to either.

Again, this is just my experience. We have sold colored resins, including pit resins, in a variety of color variations over the years and some technicians claim they can tell a difference but I have never been able to tell the difference myself so if I were to recommend that to you it would only be to sell more resin, and that would not be ethical. I have no problem selling colored resins to those who prefer them but I can only "recommend" what I believe in myself.

Do your customers really object to a properly finished pit using clear resin? That that would be a very rare exception with our customers.
