Do any of you feel it is neccessary to have extra insurance on your work vehicle? I am not sure if it is something I need to look into or not.

Thanks,

I called my ins co (USAA) and they told me if I use my personal vehicle for business use, I would need to have a clause or something added. Best thing to do is call your carrier and ask. Better safe than sorry.

Fasbreak,

At least in Texas anyone even transporting used stuff to a weekend flea market, if involved in an accident could be hung out to dry for not carrying business ins.

Ours on the Saturn is about $30.00 a month extra.

Yes you should have all the ins to cover your business and you should incorperate your business to further protect yourself. Talk to an attorney to see if this is for you.

I heeded this post today and went and saw my Farmers agent. Lo and behold I needed to upgrade from commuter to business on both trucks for a total of $26 per month increase. I can't imagine what could have happened if I went on my way and paid no mind to it. Now I just need to figure out where I am going to find some reasonably priced health insurance. (bad joke, I know!)

Absolutely make sure your insurance company knows what you are doing, especially if your vehicle has signs/lettering on it. Business use is very reasonable and you dont want to drive around without it.

I just want to add a clarification. Farmers in Texas has 3 classes of usage. Commuter/personal use for regular joes who drive to the office and sit there till they go home. Business... which is needed even if you just carry brochures in your vehicle all the way to driving FOR work. Commercial is for hauling for pay and throwing the keys to your employees and letting them do your bidding with your vehicle. Commercial is the expensive one. I don't know if every provider has these 3 classes or just 2.
