Re: re: cracked windshield

I have been wondering how successful techs are doing your repairs in the rain and cold. Does working with all purpose resins really work. And does it really matter how cold it gets outside? I understand that the windshield has got to be 70 degrees or their about.
when it is sprinkling on the glass while you are doing the repair is that the kiss of death? I understand the need to get the vehicle out of rain while doing the repair but if you are mobile, an EASY UP shade is only going to cover so much.
And last but not least, can someone tell me what the controversy on doing long crack repair is (any thing over three inches),and scratch removal. I was told if you can feel it, its too deep to repair.

WORKING IN THE RAIN &COLD!!

CHPRFIXR,

I would say that as long as you can stand the temp. outside then by all means do all the repairs you want.

Remember to:

1. Warm the windshield to your manufacturers specs until you determine what you prefer. I personally try to get the glass to a temp. of 70 deg.

2. I would not use the defroster though. If glass is cold soaked and you introduce direct temp. extremes this may cause the damage to become a complete loss. Try using the heater instead to bring the glass to desired temp subtlely.

3. I would also check with your manufacturer for their resin spec's in cold weather applications.

4. Make sure you cure properly.

5. As for the rain. Well we are 100% also and will not due repairs in the rain unless the customer has cover. If it is a sprinkle as you put it then yes we will attempt the repair and cover it.( A baseball cap works just fine in this situation and even on a sunny day to keep the UV rays from hitting the repair) this might not work with all WSR systems. I own a DELTA KIT.

6. We do not get many cracks to repair. It seems like by the time they call it is to late or the crack is beyond our set limit. I believe that insurance companies consider anything over 6" a long crack. Maybe some of the other long crack repair specialists could answer this better for you.

7. With the scratches I have heard the same thing. But I believe the technology is getting much better and there might be systems out there that can handle more severe scratches. I would be concerned about the amount of glass removed and the optical distortion from it. This might be a thing of the past with all the new tooling though. I have not had one call for scratch removal yet so I have not pursued it and don't plan on marketing this service yet. Is anyone making good money with this service?

Hope this helps and good luck.

Pay it foward,
