Stumped!?!
Re: Stumped!?!
One of the keys to making crack repair worthwhile is not giving in to the fact that there is a higher failure rate. If you are doing a fairly high volume of crack repairs, it is well worth losing some $$'s on the ones that happen to fail. The higher rate you charge for crack repair combined with doing enough of them makes it very worthwhile to me.
Re: Stumped!?!
I fixed alot of cracks this year and only had to refund one customer. Cars are a different animal than trucks because of body flex. The newer 4 door chevy impala is a typical "flexible flyer." This is one I had to give a refund on.
A fresh crack is very important and is more important that length in my book. A positive stop is also key. On a crack which might run or has been running I will use a wicking and curing method and then do the stop. It works well. The runners don't even need crack jacks to open them up- the crack resin wicks in without a problem.
Now... I don't go out and dig up crack work per se. If it comes to me I do it. It is profitable but in the long run it uses A LOT of resin and is riskier as a comeback! I prefer chips but will do cracks and make good money on both. Dirty nasty curly old cracks are worthless. A nice fresh straight one will nearly disappear and hold tight. These are worth every penny! I fixed one on a V6 Altima and the guy was sooo happy he gave me a $10.00 tip. Some people liken it to magic. I credit this forum and the technology of this industry.
