If you notice a ''silverish'' ring around the repair.....it is a Solar shield. For sure.
I will save you the exact chemical details, but the ''coating'' reacts/interacts, leaving a ring around the finished repair.
This problem has been described elesewhere on this forum too. Perform a search to find more details.

I wrote some sort of ''warning'' a while back. We, in Europe, were confronted with this ''all new'' type of windshield some six years ago and instantly found out about this problem. The only benefitting parties in this are, do I need to mention, the glass manufacturers and glass fitters.

This all sets the various ''green initiatives'' not just one step back in time, to me it is many, many steps. Where are the ''green'' parties, we have never hearth anything from them since this new thing came up. What happened to ''doing the right thing''? Or would it be a very straightforward, plain and simple thing?
Would it be money? Whatever it is, it is pathetic to me.

It would be a great thing if our Association would be able to seek attention for this. For example in politics, using influentials, media, insurance companies, Greenpeace kinda networks etc. I am NOT saying they didn't, I just don't know, but if they didn't....it would be a great opportunity for them to get this thing started.
I know, I know, this takes time, energy and money, but it still would be a great thing -in my opinion.

I just read the article. What are the insurance companies recommendation when these WS's need repair. I would think most owners would want a replacement. This is the first I've heard of this WS. According to the article its been around since the late 90's. I knew about looking for different typests of Headsup dispays, but I was not aware of the circle after a repair. You would have thought NWRA would have covered this in more depth on their study material. Are there any other vehicle manufacturer using this product? Iam keeping a copy of this in my repair kit as a reminder.

Yep, nothing you can do to avoid the white ring on those stupid shields. It seems to do it worse on older chips. In the pic, it does have the look to me, of a bullseye that also had moisture in it... has a dark tint to the perimeter, especially at the far angle. But either way, it's not related to the white/silver ring. I hate those things. Recently, the local MB dealer hired a new manager. The first w/s he needed fixed? Yep... one of those evil solar jobs.

*edit* Frank, thanks for the links. I wasn't aware of the California freaks trying to legislate this garbage. Leave it to the left coast.... no offense to our w/s buds over there.

I also agree with what Brent and others posted. Have ran into these often at one of my Pontiac dealers (mostly on the Montana, Rendezvous and occasionally on the Transport models)

I always made sure to fully explain to customer prior to repair about cosmetic results with these shields and noted it on their signed invoice to avoid any future concerns.

I just finished talkin to a glass tech from a company in texas. They call this a "HALO" and its the way it is on these solar windshield. Nothing can be done and no product to help fix these pontiacs at this time.
Also regarding the moisture someone was asking me about. I reviewed the photo further and i see what you were talking about. Appears like there is a dark spot towards the top of the halo but there no, its just a reflection of soemething when i took the photo. There is nothing there other than that small haze dot (which i still must polish out) and the HALO.

Yup. From what i gather, its sort of like a rainbow in the sky. You see it buts it still kind of an illusion from the way light carries through it

To follow up on what you stated. I've repaired many of these without issue...as long as no silver marks or silver lines showed during an inspection. Bulls-eye hits always showed this ring, while lighter hits like stars or others didn't. If a customer or dealer tells me to repair despite of cosmetic results...I still do them, as these shields will cost more than others to replace. Some repaired as normal while others did not.

I have also repaired many, I do take the time to set customer expectations first, as I do in most repairs.

I dont know about yours but I find my circles went away years ago when I started to pressure cure Some MFGs dont want you to pressure cure with thier system so make sure yours is compatible before you try it
