Just thought I's ask if any of you guys deal in plate glass repair. I have one potential customer that approached me last week that owns a small convenient store that has a plate glass window that someone recently shot a BB into. I checked with replacement glass shop and determined that a replacement for this size would cost about $600.00. Any suggestions on what the going rate is for such a repair?

I didn't know plate glass could be repaired. I thought it worked only with windshields because of the special layers it's made of. Very interesting though. Could be well worth looking into.

Actually, most good WSR vendors have resins specifically suited for the purpose of plate glass repair.

Might use a bit more resin than the average WS bullseye, but it can definateley be a moneymaker!!!

Mikedoby,

I've done a few plate glass party store windows before with B.B. shots. Used the thickest resin I could find or had available. Repairs turned out fine. For a single hit I charged $75 and $20 each additional. If they didn't want to put out cash I just took a store credit. Bud Light fund  Probably should ask for more up front and expect to be swindled down.

Good luck!

Plate glass scares me, especially the really large panes. When windshield glass breaks, it goes into small pellet-like pieces, all held together with the laminate center. But when plate glass breaks, it flies apart in big shards, and it is heavy too. Make a wrong move or misjudge the job and you can have the whole window fall on you. I do think the concept is wonderul, and savings to the customer are tremendous, but for me, its not worth the potential risk.

Hi Grace,
I totally agree with you- leave plate glass alone, but, yes, it can be repaired.
You are the only person I recognize on this forum-hope all is well. Heard from Crackman lately? LOL

Wow! There's a name from the past. I have not seen a post from him for over a year.

Are you talking about ordinary, one-layer plate glass, or thermopane (2 or 3 layers with air space in between) ? If anyone has found a way to fix BB holes in thermopane, I'd like to know about it!

IFIXEMALL,

No, we are referring to single plate glass and not multilayer or thermo-pane glass. I have not seen anyone that was able to repair glass with a vacuum layer between the glass plates.
