Dry Out Solutions

I am confused.....and a new guy. Winter approaching in the UK and moisture will be my enemy. Many posts give opinions on chip dry-out techniques........ranging from DO NOT USE SOLUTIONS cos they affect the PVB to 'YES, these chemicals are ace'
Is there a definitive answer, are they alcohol based, should I use them.
Being a new guy, I am a bit warey of using a gas heater on cold screens, so guide me fellas.
And, how do these solutions work.....do I apply them & then evapourate.
